In a South Australian first, the City of Salisbury is piloting a new community support model by introducing a social worker in our library service. With cost-of-living pressures impacting many and libraries increasingly called on to support diverse needs, we’ve partnered with Sonder, a leading provider of integrated health and community services across South Australia, to provide an on-site social worker at our Salisbury Community Hub to assist both the community and our staff. The role goes beyond traditional social work; and is embedded within the existing library team, serving as a point of contact for customers, who may not know about or engage with local community services, as well as provide peer support to build the resilience and capacity of staff. The City of Salisbury is proud to lead this unique approach to its service delivery so that less of our community fall through the cracks. The project has been funded by City of Salisbury, with support from the Libraries Board of South Australia, Public Library Services, Leanne Mitchel CF.

So, with a view to the near future and the start of the next political cycle, Localis has asked a wide range of policy experts, local government leaders and industry bodies, to sketch their plan for what a successful planning system that generates community support for development might look like. The contributors to Localis’s essay collection set out ideas for a hope-filled future in which the new homes and developments our country needs might be built in harmony with existing communities and in line with the contours of place. Our fourteen essays cover a lot of ground from diverse experiences and backgrounds, as planners, local politicians, policymakers and developers and covering contexts from the rural to the very urban, greenfield to brownfield. Community councils: What is their role and how is their activity evaluated? To strengthen the role of community councils in collaboration with state bodies and civil society, new systems have been implemented. Previously, community councils under state bodies provided civil society institutions with the legal basis to implement their initiatives by giving additional recommendations. This, in turn, helps address social issues quickly and effectively. The activity of community councils is evaluated annually. During this evaluation process, the efficiency of their initiatives and projects is reviewed. The results of the evaluation are made public, ensuring that the activities of council members are transparent and accountable to both the public and state bodies. Starting from January 1, 2025, community councils under state bodies plan to adopt new legal documents to enhance their activities further. This special collaborative series between the IRPP and the Urban Studies Program and the SFU School of Public Policy will highlight the work of the individuals who have spent their careers in the community and non-profit housing sectors and will consider how the sector can help to solve Canada’s ongoing housing crisis. In this first episode of the series, co-hosts Hanan Ali and Natasha Mhuriro sit down with three experts in the community housing sector: Rebecca Schiff, Dean of the Faculty of Human Health Sciences at UNBC - University of Northern British Columbia; Ray Sullivan, the Executive Director at the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association; and David Hulchanski, a Professor in the Faculty of Social Work and at the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto.
