Embracing sustainability for a greener tomorrow! On this World Environment Day, let's highlight MIFB’s sustainable journey for 2024: 1. Last year, we achieved a milestone by transforming 33KG of food waste into 10KG of nutrient-rich compost through our waste management efforts. 2. We're stepping up our waste reduction initiatives by introducing new methods to effectively recycle food waste generated during the event and materials from the booths. 3. In July 2024, we are aiming to set a new record in collecting food waste. The compost created from this will be generously donated to urban farms in Semenyih and Rawang, supporting their sustainable farming practices. Sustainable Business: Investing Net Profits for a Greener Future? I really like this conversation and the powerful message from Ferruh Gurtas Tetra Pak sums it up: “This is about the survival of us, not the planet because the planet will survive. We really need to see this systemically not as a lifestyle but as a mandatory requirement for us to continue to live." Top 10 Takeaways from the Panel on Decarbonising the Food Value Chain and this great conversation with Ferruh, Maya Hari from Terrascope and Adam Brennan from Thai Union Group PCL. 1- Upstream and Downstream Emissions: Understanding that nearly 50% of emissions come from farming and production (upstream), while packaging (downstream) is crucial for reducing emissions and preventing food loss. 2- Science-Based Targets(#sbti): Tetra Pak has committed to net-zero by 2050, with a 90% reduction in emissions across scope 1, 2, and 3, and requires suppliers to reduce scope 3 emissions by 50% by 2030. 3- Material Innovation: Switching to fiber-based materials in packaging is highlighted as a significant step toward emission reduction. 4- Traceability and Technology: Thai Union uses satellite tracking to gather data and improve efficiency in the seafood industry, where 90% of emissions are scope 3. 5- Imperfect Data: Companies should start their decarbonisation journey without waiting for perfect data. Collaboration across the value chain is essential. 6- Product Carbon Footprint (#PCF): PCF can serve as a common unit of currency for measuring emissions, helping companies compare and reduce emissions across products. 7- Smart Data Utilization: Thai Union leverages satellite technology to estimate emissions from fishing vessels and shrimp farms, avoiding the need for direct data collection. 8- Green Innovation: Viewing sustainability not just as a regulatory necessity but as an opportunity for revenue growth, such as extracting value from seafood byproducts. 9- Consumer Communication: Effectively conveying sustainability messages through labels like MSC and ASC, and providing sustainable options to retailers. 10- Systemic Changes: Emphasizing the need for systemic changes for our survival, where sustainable practices are seen as mandatory rather than optional. #scope3 #esg #decarbonization #food #fish #package
