New MOOC - ‘The EU in Changing Times’: Section 1.4 provides an insight of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, passed in early 2024, as the EU’s most significant migration policy change in recent years. The Pact reflects a balance between solidarity and stricter migration controls, as public sentiment across Europe has shifted towards tougher measures. It focuses on four key pillars: securing external borders, fast and efficient procedures, solidarity and responsibility, and international partnerships. While the Pact aims to ensure fairness and efficiency, human rights organisations argue it undermines refugee rights and sets a dangerous precedent. As these laws come into force, it’s crucial to strike a balance between security and empathy, and to uphold the principles of universal human rights. Learn more with Havva Mercimekoğlu Yeşil, LL.M. ! Everyone who has wanted to study at university has faced these questions. They’re big, challenging, perhaps even scary decisions. For refugees, it’s even more complicated. To the list above add: ● Language barriers hindering access to information. ● Reduced financial means due to displacement. ● Lack of awareness regarding available scholarships. ● A patchwork of informal, online, international, and national education opportunities. ● Unfamiliar application processes. ● Refugee status limiting educational options. And more.. But that is where Mosaik steps in to help guide refugees toward potential opportunities. We understand the obstacles, and we are here for you. 🌏 Last week, I had the privilege of engaging in a thought-provoking dialogue with the Minister of International Development and youth leaders from the Atlantic region. Together, we explored the challenges faced by Nova Scotian youth and delved into potential solutions. Our discussions centered around three critical themes: 💠 Integration of Newcomers and Refugees 💠 International Students and Housing Availability and Affordability 💠 Youth Engagement in Rural Areas in Global Affairs These conversation revealed once again, the importance of improving the access to culturally, and youth-tailored mental health services, transportation services, clear and consistent information management and sharing by government entities. #YouthEngagement #CommunityEngagement #Sustainability #newcomers #GlobalAffairs #LocalIssues #Immigration Atlantic Council for International Cooperation Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada

My baby is out! This dissertation examines the power relations of integration and how integration policies and practices produce, enable, and constrain the subjectivity of an integrateable refugee and immigrant. Its interest lies in displaying integration as a concept, policy, practice, and lived experience, which has problematic consequences. Structural barriers and racism hamper refugees’ and immigrants’ access to both education and the labour market, and this is not actively addressed at the policy level or in practice. Instead, integration practices focus on ‘fixing’ the individual by re-skilling and skilling them through education and training. At the same time, Finland’s integration policy is considered comprehensive and has been commended by, for example, the international Migration Policy Index (MIPEX) as one of the top ten integration policies in the world. However, as this dissertation shows, although the Finnish integration policy and its implemented practices are praised internationally and built on inclusiveness, equal opportunities and non-discrimination, hidden realities still exist behind the official policy and everyday practices.
