Dear Process Technicians, Engineers and EITs /TITs As you embark on your career journey, particularly in its early stages, embracing a hands-on approach is crucial. This approach not only deepens your understanding of the processes but also enhances your ability to tackle technical challenges effectively. Additionally, it fosters an appreciation for the indispensable roles of field operators and process controllers. Remember, many of them underwent the same qualifications as you did. Let's discard the habit of underestimating their expertise. They often possess invaluable insights into complex issues and can greatly assist in problem-solving. Therefore, prioritize building strong relationships with them and actively engaging in the field. This collaborative mindset is key to success in Process Engineering.

Embracing Growth, Teamwork, and New Challenges As I reflect on my time here at Contract Resources, I’m amazed at how much I’ve learned and how far I’ve come. Still within my first year as a Graduate Chemical Engineer stationed here at Ampol Lytton Refinery, I’ve gained invaluable experience in planning work methodologies, developing SWMS, and conducting step 7 conversations before executing chemical cleaning jobs. One of my most significant milestones was having a small part to play in contributing to T&I 2024, where I led a group of fitters and technicians during night shifts, overseeing the chemical cleaning of various vessels. It’s funny how life brings certain experiences full circle. My time in the Singapore Army as a section IC really helped me step up, especially when working with seasoned professionals—many with more years of experience under their belt than I have! As the turnaround wound down, I transitioned back into the Industrial Services crew. The Industrial Services Supervisors and Leading Hands gave me opportunity to join them and assist in the industrial services work, which opened my eyes to fitting work, HPW blasting, and vacuum operations. Witnessing high-risk operations like bundle pulling firsthand was an eye-opener—I saw how much expertise and teamwork goes into making these complex processes run smoothly. What’s been just as rewarding is seeing how every workgroup within Contract Resources comes together to get the job done. From scaffolding erection for insulation removal to mechanical maintenance and recommissioning, it’s a true team effort. And while my role is as a chemical engineer, I’ve learned not to limit myself—I’ve gained experience in areas I never imagined, which could prove invaluable down the line. Beyond the technical side, I’ve really bonded with my team. The friendships I’ve built here remind me of the camaraderie I had back in the Army. One example? We decided on a whim to throw a barbecue—everyone chipped in $10 for ingredients, and we spent the day laughing, chatting, and just enjoying each other’s company. It’s moments like these that remind me that while work is important, the relationships we build along the way are what truly matter. Work hard, play hard—that’s the balance I’m grateful to have found here at Contract Resources. #ContractResources #Ampol #ChemicalEngineering #Teamwork #ProfessionalGrowth #Leadership #LearningByDoing

Engineer to Technician 🛠️ After completing 5 years of degree & 3 years as an engineer, I turn into a technician. 😱 Of course the first impression will be seen as a step down, but I see it as a deeper dive into the core of engineering. I always have concern over the “hands-on” aspect and I made this jump to prove myself over it. Breaking the myth of “Engineer cuma baca buku” 📚 Before I take this decision I ask myself repeatedly on who is an engineer? Does the role or responsibility makes you an engineer? 🧐 NO. For me an engineer is a problem solver using correct analysis and ensure it is reliable. And that’s exactly what I’m going to try adapt into the technicians work culture. When I decided to do this transition, I faced many concerns and backlash. But I believe in stick to my plan till reach the goal 😉 I owe big time to Kausalya Tamalmani for advising me throughout this transition 🙏🏼 Nevertheless, I will keep on involving engineering into my work. Because… Once an engineer, always an engineer. 👷🏽♂️ Have you ever taken an unexpected career decision that is unusual and risky? Share your story! #Engineer #oilandgas #mechanical #technician #technical #careergrowth
