Further preliminary design for 3 houses in Stratford, London. I’ve never quite been able to lose the pleasure to be found in looking at a windowless facade, especially those examples that veer towards the monumental. Hence my (and I suspect many others too) fascination with Georgian end of terrace blind window facades and the work of Hans Poelzig, as one important example. Preliminary façade to sit behind an existing listed Georgian garden wall in East London, alongside a busy road.

The design of this villa is distinguished by its bold, abstract use of geometric forms, creating a visually striking statement that merges artistic expression with functional living space. The structure takes the form of a fragmented pyramid, seemingly broken or split down the middle, which gives it an avant-garde, almost sculptural appearance. One of the most eye-catching features is the hanging swimming pool suspended between the two main sections of the building, blending the concepts of architecture and art installation. This pool serves as both a functional space and a centerpiece that draws attention to the innovative use of water within the design, doubling as a waterfall that spills into the larger pool below. The integration of indoor and outdoor spaces is seamless, with staircases that weave in and out of the building, blurring the line between the interior and the landscape. The use of stone in construction provides a robust and earthy feel, while large glass panels ensure transparency and connectivity with the surroundings. Lighting plays a critical role in the villa’s ambiance, with strategic placement that accentuates the water features and the angular facets of the structure. The overall design is unique for its daring architectural form, its blending of elements like water and greenery, and its interactive layers that encourage a fluid and dynamic living experience.

Well kempt, public spaces with blue skies and people drinking coffee outside cafe bars. Balconies with residents casually waving down to the pedestrians below. Bicycles and no cars. This image arguably ticks all of the boxes for councils, planning departments and the public but lets face it these inspirational images are easily created. I know this because at BLOCK Architects & Interior Designers we too can create these images. However, Scotland is getting wetter summers, skies are more often filled with clouds or rain. Its usually cold. Councils cannot afford to cut the grass. As an Architect one of our fist basic principles is to understand our environment and design for it. So, should we as designers be presenting images showing the ‘worst case scenario’? What might our public realm look like with no greenery, for example? Much like Hamilton or East Kilbride main thoroughfares as they are now?

"Darkness matters! Preserving the winter line view is essential, and the façade lighting for this project is designed to complement, not overpower, the natural beauty. By carefully integrating lighting, we ensure the stunning winter line remains unobstructed while subtly illuminating the structure. The Design process this project is to preserve the natural essence of the night by avoiding the use of harsh lighting. The project's location is incredibly surreal and romantic, and excessive lighting could blur the scenic beauty, introducing glare and unnecessary distractions. By utilizing minimalistic light fixtures, we aim to enhance the ambiance, create a sense of security, and subtly highlight the architectural curves and edges without overpowering the environment
