Germany has indeed taken a significant step toward sustainable transportation with the introduction of its electric highway (eHighway) on a section of the A5 motorway in Hesse. The eHighway pilot project is scheduled to conclude its trial phase on December 31, 2024. Following this date, the hybrid trucks involved will be returned to their manufacturers, and the overhead infrastructure along the motorway will be dismantled. This project, initiated in 2019, aimed to assess the feasibility of using overhead electric lines to power and recharge hybrid trucks in motion, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions in freight transport. While the trial provided valuable insights, the decision has been made not to extend the project beyond its planned end date. As of now, there are no publicly announced plans to continue or expand the eHighway system on the A5 or other motorways in Germany. The conclusion of this trial marks the end of the current implementation of this technology on German roads. Here are the key highlights of this project: 1. Length and Location: + The eHighway spans 6 miles (10 kilometers). + It is located on the A5 motorway, south of Frankfurt, in Hesse. 2. Technology: + Overhead electric wires have been installed along this section of the motorway. + Hybrid trucks equipped with special pantographs (similar to those used by trains and trams) can connect to the wires to draw electricity. + The trucks recharge their batteries while driving, enabling them to operate in a more environmentally friendly way even after disconnecting from the overhead wires. 3. Collaboration and Goals: + The eHighway was developed by Siemens Mobility. + It aims to reduce CO₂ emissions and dependence on diesel fuel for freight transport. + Germany has set ambitious climate goals, and this pilot project represents a step toward achieving carbon neutrality in road transport. 4. Pilot Project: + It is part of a broader initiative to test the viability of electric highways. + Similar tests have been conducted in Sweden and California. 5. Economic and Environmental Impact: + If successful, the system could significantly lower operating costs for logistics companies by reducing fuel consumption. + It also aligns with EU climate objectives to decarbonize transport systems. . . . . . . . . . #rollingstock #tram #railway #freightcar #rail #railwaysafety PKP Intercity České dráhy, a.s. You've been there before, right? You're sitting in front of your computer, trying to book a trip, and you find yourself torn between making the green choice or the budget choice. So, which will it be? 💚 "Let's go there by train, it's better for the environment" 😰 "Wait, a road trip might take a little longer but it's also cheaper" Then you start to wonder: "why on earth is rail transport so expensive?" Living in the outskirts of Paris, I pay no less than €86 monthly for my commute, and I must say, the service is not always reliable (delays and cancellations can be quite frequent). 🚆 Additionally, if I want to book a return trip from Paris to Marseilles with my family of four this weekend, high-speed rail tickets will probably cost me between €350 and €450. 🚗 To get there and back by car would only cost me about €300 including gas and tolls, no matter how many passengers in the car. Intercity bus options would be even cheaper. Apart from the time each journey would take, the incentive to use eco-friendly modes of transportation not strong enough, unfortunately. So why does it cost so much? The answer lies in various factors, of course, starting with the law of supply and demand, and the complex infrastructure equipment that trains run on. But let's focus on operational expenses: just as cars require fuel and repairs, trains need electricity and maintenance – and these are big cost drivers! Luckily, there’s hope! Here are some solutions that can help mitigate these costs: 🏋♂️ Weight optimisation: using lighter components (bogies, batteries, etc.) with compact designs and innovative materials can significantly reduce energy consumption and decrease operational costs ⏳ Reliable components: durable train parts help reduce downtime and maintenance needs, leading to cost savings 🔧 Facilitated maintenance: components that are easy to access to maintainers and that enable condition monitoring save money By continuing to improve in these areas, we can work towards making rail transport not only more efficient but also more cost-effective for train owners, operators, and hopefully passengers so that we always make the green choice! 💚 More insights here: https://lnkd.in/ehsJsQCj #railquestions #components #Alstom

Sweden has just unveiled the world's first permanent electrified road that charges electric vehicles as they drive on it. Dubbed "eRoadArlanda," this pioneering road has an electric rail embedded in the roadway, which transfers energy to EVs through a movable arm. This innovation may well help solve one of the biggest challenges in electric mobility: limited battery range because EVs can continue charging on the go. A sustainable transportation path, the first electrified road is huge towards this future. This innovation will significantly reduce the time spent at charging stations as electric vehicles can travel for distances without a need to refuel, and it will become quite feasible for long distances. It may lead to a Swedish model that can change green infrastructure across the world as several countries are likely to go for similar solutions to develop a clean and efficient future. . . . #ElectrifiedRoad #SwedenInnovation #ElectricVehicles #SustainableTransportation #GreenTechnology #EVCharging #CleanEnergy #FutureOfMobility #eRoadArlanda #SmartInfrastructure #Tribunetrends
