Congratulations Hang Shu for successfully defending his doctoral dissertation, "Impulse-Induced Nonlinear Dynamics of Flexible Mechanical Metamaterials," under the advisory of Jordan Raney, Associate Professor in MEAM. Shu’s work explored mechanical metamaterials—artificially designed structures with unique properties determined by their internal structure. By investigating nonlinear dynamics, the research expanded understanding of how these materials can transform engineering design across deployable structures, reconfigurable robots, and advanced mechanical systems. DFG approves two new Collaborative Research Centers/Transregios with TUD participation 🤝 Researchers at #TUDresden are celebrating two additional successes in the latest funding round of Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation. The DFG approved the creation of the Collaborative Research Center Transregio (SFB/TRR) 404: Next Generation Electronics With Active Devices in Three Dimensions [Active-3D]. In this Transregio, TU Dresden as the coordinating university (spokesperson: Prof. Thomas Mikolajick) and RWTH Aachen will work on the development of the next generation of microelectronic components. The establishment proposal for SFB/TRR 402: Intelligent Production Technologies for Lightweight Plastic Structures with Load-Dedicated 3D-Gradation of Reinforcement Architecture (DediGrad) was also successful. Technische Universität Chemnitz is the coordinating university (Prof. Lothar Kroll), with TU Dresden (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sharing our last paper published on JFM, “Comparison between shear-driven and pressure-driven oscillatory flows over ripples”, a collaboration between Mechanical Engineering at UT Dallas and College of Engineering - UPRM, Umberto Ciri and Sylvia Rodriguez-Abudo. We found differences between mean flow pattern and the time-averaged Reynolds stress distribution. This suggests that numerical or experimental shear-driven configurations may capture well the net effects of coastal transport processes (which occur in pressure-driven oscillatory flow), but care should be exercised in interpreting phase-dependent dynamics near the troughs. SERDP is acknowledged for providing support and HPC@UTD and Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) for computational time.

📢 CSD&M PARIS 2024 - SPEAKER Levent Yilmaz, professor at Auburn University will present: "Dual-Interaction Adversarial Experiment Model for Robustness Analysis of Complex Systems". Simulation experiments often explore the behavioral space of a system by sampling designs and scenarios under a predefined experiment design. Such experiments provide useful information about the interactions among system parameters while ignoring emergent and evolving results that can be used to re-frame the experiment dynamically. This paper explores the concept of an adversarial self-organizing experiment strategy to enable dynamic updating of both the design and the scenario space as simulation experiments unfold. The co-evolutionary process and its underlying dual-interaction activation dynamics between the system design and scenario spaces demonstrate the potential for revealing robust designs and scenarios that effectively stress such designs. His work has been recently published in 'Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing', under the title 'Broadband nonlinear delay and sum (NL-DAS) for baseline-free damage imaging using a sparse sensor network'. This week, I attended at International DSM Conference 2024 in Stuttgart in collaboration with the summit of Advanced Systems Engineering (ASE) on behalf of BINZ Automotive and TUM Institute of Flight System Dynamics. The conference took part at my former employer Fraunhofer IAO. Moreover, I could visit the TTI Technologie-Transfer-Initiative GmbH, which is an important facility for start-ups in Germany. From my point of view, new trends are 1) Saving time: DSM architecture drafts via artificial intelligence (AI), 2) Being sustainable: Identifying sustainable product architectures & metalevel life cycle models, 3) Beyond organisation: Grouping of employees who actually would have not worked together in early product development phase, 4) Advanced systems engineering: From data to outcome to model with the goal of an improved outcome, 5) Sensitive systems and process chains: Risk management in complex systems, 6) Data-driven model-based systems engineering (DDMBSE).
