Bait and Switch QA Job? Have you ever been duped with the promise of one job only to find out it’s something you didn’t sign up for? For example, the job post and job description are for a Software Quality Engineer then after accepting the position you learn your primary responsibility will be Testing. QA professionals understand the difference between “Testing” and “Quality Assurance”. Quality Assurance is about early detection and prevention of defects. Quality Control (testing) is about finding bugs in the product prior to release. These are two vastly different disciplines. The former is a process discipline that focuses on the entire product lifecycle with an emphasis on defect prevention. The latter is a narrow technical discipline which emphasizes defect detection. Is any programmer capable of being a successful QA engineer? Do QA engineers not require high skills? From my experience as a QA engineer in several companies and my interactions with numerous programmers and QA engineers, I've observed that the responsibilities of a QA engineer are still unclear to many, and this primarily stems from the QA engineers themselves. Indeed, any programmer can be a tester, but being a QA engineer is entirely different for the following reasons: As a QA engineer in any project, it requires you to understand and analyze requirements, discuss any additional requirements, and their impact on other parts of the project, whereas a programmer focuses on the task assigned to them and relies on the details provided in that task (very few programmers analyze and discuss requirements and logic). As a QA engineer, you must ensure the smooth progression of the project across development, staging, and production environments. This involves monitoring and following up on every detail of the project and every piece of code that is deployed in any environment, and determining the appropriate testing needed (here, the QA may undermine their own work as not every change requires an end-to-end test). As a QA engineer, you are also a programmer. Nowadays, as an engineer working on automation, you need to write complete code to test the site, deal with APIs, write the appropriate tests for them, delve into database integrity, and understand the nuances of security in the project... As a QA engineer, your role doesn’t just stop at testing tasks assigned to you by verifying the acceptance criteria. Often, QAs need to add tasks (not bugs) to ensure requirements are executed optimally, especially in cases that are ambiguous or challenging for the business team.
