I read these journal articles constantly and am so thankful for the research the Gillings School has conducted to prove the dangers of drinking water in private wells that has not taken my own health, but are real and present concerns to North Carolinians. With lax legislation over farming with open waste, endocrine disrupting herbicides, chemicals, reckless land use it seems there’s more funding “supposed conservation initiatives” that some, but not all respect after project completion, Fish, Game and Wildlife than public health, which is critically important to the state. The vitality of streams, creeks and rivers go hand in hand w human health. While I understand commercial animal operations are financially important to agriculture, why public health takes a back seat vexes me. Tell my kidneys and heart attack from sepsis even after my well was professionally sanitized from the research on my first essay, where I cited a paper from the Gillings School. The bacterial / nutrient load by the metric ton is that impactful living on a floodplain beneath a working cattle farm. It’s across the state. Recently finished an Annotated Bibliography with their recently published articles from last winter with NCWELL Database of 20 years of cumulative research. Another article states 98% of gastrointestinal illnesses in all North Carolina Emergency Rooms are from contaminated water, not food sources. Their research will help grant writing for my community of color, lesser incomes, and women for six miles to the reservoir, who need better education to test, sanitize and to obtain expensive filtration for wells, because of environmental injustice more favorable to farmers than public health. Their departments stand united in research and the information has empowered others who research with irrefutable evidence to have better presentation skills as I take up an invitation to speak at a major university on environmental injustice this year.
We are proud to share that the Gillings School of Global Public Health has once again been ranked by peer leaders as the top public school of public health in the United States — and number two overall. https://lnkd.in/eccpqeku
