These are our conclusions from #COP16, BioCarbon Standard reflected on the inspiring advancements in biodiversity protection. We are proud to align our standards with these global goals, ensuring that nature-based solutions are at the forefront of our approach.
Key insights include:
🌱 A unified path: National Biodiversity and Climate Adaptation Plans now align with the Kunming-Montreal Framework. This calls for USD 200 billion annually by 2030 to support conservation efforts, especially in developing nations.
🌿 Public access and inclusivity: For the first time, CO16's Green Zone welcomed the public, recognizing Indigenous, local, and Afro-descendant communities as “custodians of nature.”
🌐 Technological innovation: New technologies like artificial intelligence strengthen conservation initiatives, improving data access and analysis.
BioCarbon Standard is committed to advancing these goals with high-quality standards for sustainability and biodiversity protection.

The world needs a different approach to how we live in peace with nature.
At the UN Biodiversity Conference #COP16, which opens next week, nations, organisations and businesses will convene in Cali, Colombia for what has been described as ‘the first implementation COP’. Policymakers will work on defining plans for the future under the heading ‘Peace with nature’, more specifically on how to contribute to the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
Yet, the lack of standardised biodiversity metrics presents a challenge in monitoring, assessing and mitigating biodiversity loss for governments, organisations and businesses. DHI has developed comprehensive and science-based methodologies that contribute to safeguarding biodiversity and promoting sustainable ecosystem management on a global scale. Our colleagues Verena Schrameyer, PhD and Lars O Mortensen, Ph.D. will be part of Denmark’s delegation at COP16 and look forward to contributing with their knowledge and experience in solutions that can help with the full cycle of biodiversity challenges from monitoring to ecosystem restoration.
Feel free to reach out to them if you will also be present at COP16 and want to know more.

This week has started #COP16 on #biodiversity in Cali (Colombia) & we are there as a research centre!!! 🌸 🦫 🦚 Which key points will be discussed and why #science voice has to be considered? 👇
🖊️ First, remember that the last COP on biodiversity became popular because it was agreed to restore 30% of nature by 2030 🌿 For the first time, 196 countries signed the 30x30 agreement to protect the planet's natural ecosystems and biodiversity! 🤝
📌 Now, COP16 wants to put this agreement into action by designing a roadmap to make this goal real. The most critical points to decide are: 1⃣ how to invest the economic resources & 2⃣ how to monitor biodiversity to make sure that biodiversity loss is actually being reversed. 🔎 🌏
✅ From CREAF, we attend as a research centre involved in scientific projects, such as RESPIN project, and international initiatives on biodiversity, such as IPBES, and also because we provide scientific information to various governments and government representatives. 📸 💫 Look at the photo of our dream team there: Alicia Pérez-Porro, PhD, Anna de las Heras Carles, Dani Villero Pi and Lluís Brotons!!!
Global biodiversity is continuing to decline at an alarming rate. Experts estimated that 37% of species might be threatened or driven to extinction by 2100. To discuss how to solve these issues, politicians and civil society members will gather in Cali, Colombia, during the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16).
What is the Convention on Biological Diversity? The Convention on Biological Diversity was established in 1992 to protect biodiversity, promote sustainable use of natural resources and ensure fair benefit-sharing from genetic resources.
Why does it matter? The Convention on Biological Diversity matters because it provides a global framework for conserving biodiversity and natural resources, which is critical for the health of our planet and the well-being of future generations. It helps focus on turning commitments into action—safeguarding our planet's biodiversity.
What will COP 16 focus on? The main goal is to create a new framework for a more nature-positive future:
🌍 Implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (the Biodiversity Plan) into international action
🤝 Investing and collaborating with nature to bolster resource mobilization and technical cooperation
🚀 Accelerating progress on access and benefit-sharing
Going forward, the development of robust, accurate and impactful nature-based solution projects will be the starting point to mobilize resources for nature. Resource mobilization for nature and technical cooperation is vital to both protect biodiversity and enhance the capacity of businesses and societies to coexist with nature. This will require a shift in focus to capacity building on biodiversity projects alongside creating an understanding of the most suitable financial instruments to implement such projects.

🌍 "No business on a dead planet": This is one of the phrases heard last week at COP16 Colombia🎙️
The first week of #COP16 was intense! More than 190 countries came together to discuss critical issues in #biodiversity and renew their commitment to #nature protection and the sustainable use of natural resources.
Our experts Sabrina Collin Capon, Biodiversity Manager and Jeanne Barreyre, Research Consultant on Nature-Based Solutions & Biodiversity are on site and share their highlights of the first week:
📈 Progress towards biodiversity targets
🎯 The presentation of national plans to achieve the 23 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
🌐 Discussions on access to genetic resources and benefit-sharing, with no definitive conclusions yet
🌳 The awareness of companies and their commitment to the implementation of sustainable practices
🌿And now? The second week of COP16 promises to be just as decisive. We will continue to advocate for ambitious action and innovative solutions to:
- Assess progress in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal framework
- Mobilise funding to achieve these objectives
- Ensure fair and equitable sharing of the utilisation of genetic resources
All companies depend on the proper functioning of ecosystems. It is time to invent new economic models that respect nature 🍃
Stay tuned for our complete COP16 recap📰
A great reflection and narrative, "No business on a dead planet"; make saving planet your core business pillar and embed it at the core of your business model, as there is no business on a dead planet, makes perfect sense.
Out of ignorance, post Industrial Revolution, very quickly we have breached the limits of earth systems—breaching planetary boundaries—mobilized at least two to three tipping points (out of 16 known tipping points—WEF, Prof. Johan R). We have put most of the planetary boundaries at risk as per UN reports, we have visibility of heat waves and devastation by the hurricanes which are becoming more frequent and intense, impacting life of people and destroying the biodiversity. We have also put known and unknown biodiversity hotspots at risk. We must improve our knowledge and get aware of the context we operate at and respect the most valuable infrastructure provided by nature for the survival of life on our green and blue planet...we must start respecting the infinitely valuable nature and nature systems and stop destroying it without giving any thought...Time to think...and Act...
Thanks #EcoAct for sharing the thoughts from #COP16 in Columbia. Keep posting the key messages. Look forward to the key themes and ways forward to tackle nature and biodiversity loss...

Key takeaways from COP16 Colombia on biodiversity:
✔ A growing number of companies embrace action on nature. In total 1,261 business and industry delegates registered for Cop16 in Cali. The number is more than double the 613 present at the UN’s previous biodiversity conference in 2022.
✔The development of innovative nature metrics is boosting successful implementation of corporate nature strategies.
✔ Everything green is blue: the fates of water and ecosystems are inseparable. Water strategies are a top priority for companies.
✔Time to step up: While the ethical case is clear, there is also value generation in biodiversity strategies. According to OECD - OCDE over half of the world's GDP – is moderately or highly dependent on nature and ecosystem services.
At Moeve (former CEPSA), we have specific biodiversity goals and actions for nature protection. Additionally, we are committed to develop nature positive solar and wind energy projects.
