I just returned from Plastics World Expo North American in Cleveland, Ohio abuzz with the innovative products and technology I saw on display. Here's what I took away from the trade floor: * Biobased resins and additives are taking center stage as companies across the supply chain seek sustainable packaging solutions. These products are being used in food-contact applications like straws and food service ware, as well as other consumer items, like glasses, furniture, and clothing. * New specialty colorants and other additives are being designed to work in concert with recycling technologies and solve problems that colored plastics can face in the recycling stream. And new technologies are being developed to improve the sorting capabilities of recycling facilities. * Incredible new recycling technologies are emerging and making what we once thought of as not recyclable into usable feedstock for new materials. Film was being re-pelletized on the trade show floor and mixed textiles were readily being chopped into a fluffy pulp. With state Extended Producer Responsibility schemes in California, Oregon, Colorado, Maine, and Minnesota requiring packaging to meet various sustainability goals, the ability to recycle new materials with maximum efficiency will be more important than ever. I also had the pleasure of speaking about PFAS with Tom Lee (of BCLP) and Jay West (of American Chemistry Council) on the Plastics Extrusion World Expo stage. We discussed some insightful questions about the impact of PFAS in food contact legislation. Here are some of the high points: - PFAS continues to be a dominant concern for numerous industries and across supply chains. Raw material manufacturers, extruders, converters, food companies - all are addressing questions about PFAS in their products. - Litigation risks related to PFAS are less obvious than you may think. Calling a product "pure" or making other favorable representations about it can get a company into trouble if organic fluorine is detected in the product. - Concern about PFAS among the public is not dwindling and companies can expect to be addressing PFAS-related questions and liability risk for years to come. - Certain uses of PFAS are currently unavoidable because they are critical to health and safety (medical device uses, car parts) or public infrastructure (legible road signs, gasket function). Industry is working in the existing regulatory frameworks while alternatives are explored. - Test methods are still catching up to regulatory requirements. Testing for PFAS (which encompasses thousands of chemically distinct compounds) is not as simple as it might sound. Are these topics of interest to you? Please share your thoughts and let's chat more! Thanks to AMI for providing a forum for a great exchange of ideas and innovation.

Germany has long been the leading growth engine and innovator in the European plastics industry. However, recent years have seen an industry struggling with weak demand and declining investment. These issues will be among the topics for discussion at the Global Plastics Industry Seminar in Frankfurt on October 24th. Preparing the data for the day revels that along with most European countries the German market has declined by over one million tonnes since 2020, a dramatic fall. There are many underlying reasons: maturity in many applications, the movement of manufacturing eastwards and falling export opportunities. Europe’s global position will be discussed at the seminar; however, the picture is not exclusively negative, there are many opportunities often driven by sustainability concerns. Thus, polymer and additive demand still has the chance for profitable advance. Join us for the debate on Europe, its position in the world and global opportunities with more details at globalplasticsreport.com

As I prepare the detailed and original content for the Global Plastics Industry Seminar in Montegrotto Terme on September 19th it is interesting to reflect on the fact that the last two years have seen plastics consumption in Europe decline more than 12%. This is an almost unprecedented decline and demands serious questions regarding the future of our business. There are many underlying reasons, maturity in many applications, more limited scope to replace traditional materials and a diminished focus by polymer producers on innovation. All of these will be discussed at the seminar with new opportunities highlighted. However, we should not be despondent, the coming years will see the chance for advancement in many areas, with the opportunities often driven by sustainability concerns. Thus, polymer and additive demand still has the chance for profitable advance. Join us for the debate, more details at globalplasticsreport.com.

Returning to the Plastic Industry and recent independence, post WWII stories, I'd like to remain at this time. The invention of Plastic started in the very late 19th century while most plastic materials were developed around 1920-30. Major inventions belong to Du Pont, Hoechst, Dow, BASF, Bayer, but also ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) who developed Polyethylene accidently during another experiment. One earlier pioneer was Leo Baekeland in the US who invented Bakelite in 1907. It was the 1st fully synthetic plastic material already named: 'material of thousand uses'. Plastic materials started to come into use during WWII (Du Pont's Nylon was used first as a new material for parachutes) and came into wide commercial applications afterwards. The entire worldwide Plastic production in 1950 was just 1.5 million ton!! With rapid developments since then, todays production is about 450 million ton and growing. Plastic materials are essential to our modern lifestyle. At the same time we must realize that it is still a very young industry of only 80 years. Considering this there is much more to look forward to and recent efforts in Recycling are parts of that development.
