Yesterday the Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation ESPR (#ESPR) was adopted by the Council of the EU, making it the last formal step before this legislation can go into force. This framework legislation is giving the EU the tools to regulate strict environmental standards when it comes to product design for a whole set of products in the coming years. Product design rules are critical to ensure that sustainable products will be available for consumers. Under the ESPR, eco-design requirements will be set for:     - durability, reusability, upgradability and reparability, rules on the presence of substances that inhibit circularity; energy and resource efficiency; recycled content, remanufacturing and recycling; carbon and environmental footprints; and information requirements, including a Digital Product Passport.   In addition, the reporting requirements on unsold goods have been adopted, as well as the ban on destruction on unsold apparel and footwear products.   Although the specific eco-design requirements are still under development for apparel and textiles specifically, we know the important work on defining rules for textiles and apparel is already well on its way. In addition, we can certainly see that the mere promise of dedicated standards for textile product design gears up the textile industry to start preparing and improving their practices. This is very promising to see. A lot more is to come in the next years when it comes to eco-design rules, but let’s today already celebrate this important milestone. One of the biggest challenges I noticed working with Indian brands, looking to enter the European market, was the lack of understanding around the ESG guidelines recommended by the European Union. The European Union's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is set to revolutionize market standards by emphasizing transparency, stakeholder involvement, and stringent ecodesign requirements for products. With its focus on reducing environmental impact, introducing Digital Product Passports, and preventing the destruction of unsold goods, compliance can be complex. A really good explainer video from euronews about the EU’s ecodesign regulation that has now come into force. The Ecodesign for Sustainable Product Regulation (ESPR) will have some immediate implications for the textile, electronics, furniture and tyre industries with the new legislation set to encourage better product recyclability, repairability and circularity by design. In the UK, we’re seeing some mainstream repair and reuse tie ups in the fashion space with The North Face introducing its Renewed Programme and John Lewis trialling a partnership with Timpson Group with 5 stores offering a clothing repair and alteration service. But real progress will be defined by brands, especially in the technology space, embracing repairability through design by making it easier and cheaper for customers to replace parts and fix what they own. The Ecodesign for sustainable products Regulation will soon come into force and will have a big impact on the fashion industry. Amongst other things there will be a requirement to consider the circularity and environmental sustainability of products and factors such durability, recyclability and repairability with need to be taken into account in the design process. Goods will be required to have a digital passport, accessible by all, detailing the circularity and sustainability characteristics of the products. In addition there will be measures to prevent the destruction of unsold goods. The key question for those involved in the supply chain is who will be responsible for compliance and to what extent will it be possible to comply. Those at the beginning of the supply chain are concerned about the availability of resources and infrastructure needed to comply. Ultimately, for brands, it will be a question of compliance or not being able to sell the goods. The text is waiting to be published in the Official Journal, 20 days after which it will come into force. It will then apply 24 months thereafter so there is still time to plan and put measures in place. Bhavisha Mistry

Just been reading this article. The EU is talking a lot about sustainability in the fashion industry and making estimations of how much is wasted by the consumer. Unfortunately, they talk less about the industry! By experience, the issue is also coming from how and where we produce! A lot of samples is just going to the garbage including competitor samples. I would be curious to see the exact amount of garments which have been thrown out before the final product - this issue should have much more attention from the EU (based on correct numbers)! New technology - like 3D software - could be part of the solution allowing virtual fittings - reducing the number of samples, increasing sustainability and saving money for the industry.

The #ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) was published in the #OJEU on 13th June. This is an EU regulation that will require most durable goods placed on the EU market to be environmentally sustainable by design. ESPR is a framework regulation, which means that the requirements will be laid down for specific product groups by means of delegated acts adopted by the European Commission. The Commission's working plan indicates that the first products groups that could be tackled include intermediate products like iron and steel, chemicals and glass as well as end-use products like textiles and footwear, furniture, toys and tyres. The Council of the EU has approved the Ecodesign Regulation which sets requirements for sustainable products. This new regulation is intended to incentivise companies to take account of circularity from design and conception stage of product development. It introduces new requirements such as product durability, reusability, upgradability and reparability, rules on the presence of substances that inhibit circularity; energy and resource efficiency; recycled content, remanufacturing and recycling; carbon and environmental footprints; and information requirements, including a Digital Product Passport. The Ecodesign Regulation also introduces a direct-ban on the destruction of unsold textiles and footwear. On May 27, 2024, the EU Council approved the groundbreaking Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation! This regulation impacts nearly all products placed on the EU market, promoting green purchases and pushing industries to embrace circular design from the start.
