🌟 𝐀𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭: 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐬! 🍄 Years ago, before embarking on my PhD journey, I pursued an "out-of-the-box" idea. My background in biology and experience working with encroacher bushes led me to dig into the possibility of growing mushrooms from encroacher bush wood. My hunch was not off. Thanks to Lydia Horn and Meme Esther from the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform for believing in my idea and training me in mushroom production, and of course to Nangula Nuumbembe a fellow entrepreneur and mushroom enthusiast, for allowing me to use her backyard for some initial experiments. Those were truly exciting days! After our success, we introduced this initiative at RUFORUM Network, with Dr Lydia Horn leading the mushroom project component for the University of Namibia. Now, after witnessing the incredible work of done by our endevour and other projects like MycoHAB and Ndaka Mushrooms, and hearing powerful testimonies of success as the one in the video, it’s clear this message needs to be shared globally. That’s why we’ve teamed up with the talented food scientist and content creator, Maria Mercy Kapembe, to help spread the word about the immense benefits of producing mushrooms from encroacher bush species. Starting fresh with our plants in the WVU Greenhouse! Here is a close-up of one of our grow chambers as the plants are starting to sprout.

Farmers faced with increasingly complex and changing regulation for the use of plant protection products require reliable and easy-to-use information for them to comply with all safety and environment protection recommendations and to focus on optimizing crop growth in an economically and environmentally sustainable way. Therefore, I am excited to see the new CropLife Europe developed, solution driven digital tool for farmers called #AgriGuide which will help farmers to address these challenges when handling and applying plant protection products and to also comply with Regulation 2023/564 on real-time data collection for digital record keeping. This tool will also set the foundation to establish potential new approaches towards real time data-based, more realistic risk assessments. I am really looking forward to the planned roll-out of #AgriGuide to 3 pilot countries (Germany, Italy and Romania) in April and to all 27 EU countries in the coming years. I truly believe this tool has a great value for farmers, agronomists, retailers, service applicators, regulators, the industry and society and I am proud that #teamBayer was a key contributor to #AgriGuide. A big shout-out goes to everyone involved in this development at CropLife Europe, but especially to my colleagues at #teambayer Martyn Griffiths, Karandeep Singh, Catherine De Vulder, Linus Goerlitz, Katja Timm and many more. I hope we manage to build a similar tool in the US through CropLife America over the next years (discussions are ongoing) and manage to arrive at as much global standardization as possible via CropLife International.
