The U.S. Department of Energy is studying so-called "soft costs" of deploying electric vehicle charging infrastructure that sometimes are overlooked, and notes that the outlay for such items — such as permitting, inspections, administration and utility interconnections — can be higher than those for buildout costs, such as charging station construction, equipment and software. DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory is leading the initiative in partnership with peer national laboratories to add clarity about soft costs that governments and private-sector companies may incur as they consider building out EV infrastructure. Enel North America, a leading clean energy company, and Eaton, an intelligent power management firm, have announced the successful completion of #PuertoRico’s largest clean energy #microgrid. Situated at Eaton’s circuit breaker manufacturing facility in #Arecibo, the microgrid integrates a 5-megawatt (MWac) #solarsystem with a 1.1 MW battery and existing onsite generators. By generating and storing #cleanenergy independently from the external #powergrid, the microgrid substantially diminishes the facility’s #carbonfootprint, bolsters energy resilience, and reinforces community infrastructure. The solar system is projected to produce nearly 10 GWh of #renewableenergy annually, averting approximately 7,100 metric tons of #CO2emissions each year and slashing costs by almost 20%. Eaton’s sustainability endeavors at its Arecibo facility are part of the company’s broader initiative, aiming for a 50% reduction in carbon emissions across its operations by 2030. #EnelNorthAmerica #Eaton #CleanEnergy #Microgrid #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #CarbonFootprint #PuertoRico #NorthAmerica Read more: https://lnkd.in/dd5nrXAG

Amazing and thought provoking article Elisa Wood!! I was so inspired by the discussion we had after my opportunity to address the Energy Changemakers. Now lets pick a number, not a lofty percentage but specifically how many GW we want in each state and what the mix is and then make it happen. Waiting for the utilities and regulators to arrive at consensus will never get us there. We should also pick an impossibly short time horizon. Only big unifying goals that can align an industry will be achieved. As noted architect Daniel Burnham said, “Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men's blood and probably will not themselves be realized.” To realize these big plans, we need Unity. We Need a united purpose and a united strong voice. A vibrant voice for distributed energy. A united voice to break down the old barriers and push past the regulated monopolies of the past century. Instead of being reactive and heading to whatever state has the newest and best incentives, we should be proactive. Set the flag in the ground and claim our place in the future of energy. We are the Changemakers. Let’s be the change we seek. In the words of Gandhi, “The future depends on what we do in the present.”
As we’ve seen before, having a plan or goal for an energy technology can move it along more quickly. Witness the state renewable portfolio standards and 100 renewable electricity campaigns that helped spur renewable energy growth. Ben Parvey Cameron Brooks Jigar Shah Kenneth Horne

Battery storage systems are critical to a renewable energy economy, the Energy Storage Systems Act, S2499A, establishes a framework for state-wide capacity and funding. It directs the Public Utilities Commission to adopt rules for energy storage systems and for interconnecting them to the grid by May, 2025; sets concrete targets for statewide battery capacity starting with 90MW by 12/31/2026 and scaling to 600MW by the end of 2033; and empowers the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank to develop funding programs for this work. We testified in favor of this bill with the support of Hillview Environmental, LLC's extensive experience and our work to better enable storage in PUC Dockets 4743, 4982 and 5000. This bill will facilitate economical and efficient deployment of energy storage systems, which are essential to stabilize our energy system and our transition to clean electricity and lower infrastructure costs. https://lnkd.in/eNEb8xWQ This bill was introduced by Senators Dawn Euer, Esq., Samuel Zurier, Sosnowski, and DiMario.
