Today is World Refugee Day- and a poignant reminder of the huge challenges refugees face in accessing higher education, integrating into society and finding employment. To support better policy-making and international strategy on supporting refugees into higher education, we need better data. That is why Times Higher Education have partnered with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency to undertake the largest-ever global mapping exercise to collect data from higher education institutions on enrolments, scholarship opportunities and other challenges they face. The project will support UNHCR's 15x30 initiative, to raise the enrolment ratio of refugees into higher education to 15% by 2030. It currently stands at 7%, and with six years to go there is still some effort to put in. I've seen exceptional examples of the efforts to support refugee access- not least the 'Twinning Ukraine' scheme created by Cormack Consultancy Group and Universities UK International in 2022. However, there will lots of other examples from around the world- particularly in the Global South- where great work is being done but currently not captured in data. That is where we need your help- we want to engage as many universities as possible to fill out this global survey. Please sign up for the survey using the link provided below- and spread this message far and wide!
📣 On this World Refugee Day Times Higher Education is excited to announce its new partnership with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, undertaking the first-ever global mapping of higher education opportunities for refugees. 🗺 The project will provide data on enrolments and scholarship opportunities to refugees, contributing to the UNHCR’s 15by30 target, which seeks to increase refugee enrolment in higher education from the current 7% to 15% by 2030. THE will provide data to UNHCR enabling collaboration with governments, #universities, #colleges and training providers around the world to enhance access to higher education for refugees and support them on their academic and post-academic journeys. 🎓 The project is also being supported by USAID Higher Education Learning Network (HELN), Open Society University Network (OSUN), Bard College and other partners. ✍ Sign up to get information and updates about the project here: https://bit.ly/4cc7U1T A global survey to collect data and insights from institutions will be launched in late July. 📅 #WorldRefugeeDay #RefugeeDay #WithRefugees #EachOneTakeOne #timeshighereducation #15by30 #USAID #HigherEducationLearningNetwork

In our recent op-ed, School for International Training president Sophia Howlett and I highlight the crucial role U.S. colleges and universities can—and should—play in supporting refugee resettlement. These efforts can have a profoundly positive impact on campuses and their surrounding economies. We not only believe this to be true but know this definitively, having experienced it firsthand through World Learning's New Vermonter Education Program (NVEP) and Supporting Higher Education Refugee Resettlement (SHERR) program. Read more about how higher education can contribute to this critical mission at https://ow.ly/1UpX50Sqozj. #RefugeeResettlement #HigherEducation #WorldLearning #SIT #InclusiveCommunities #GlobalEducation

💡 Did you know that 72% of adolescents from Ukraine points out language difficulties as main barrier to their school enrolment in Poland? This is one of the key findings of the report “Out of School: Assessment on barriers to school enrolment for Ukrainian refugee adolescents in Poland” issued together by Save the Children Poland,CARE and International Rescue Committee. It’s important to remember, that basic command of Polish language, might be enough to hold a regular conversation, but does not suffice when adolescents must acquire complex knowledge during Chemistry or History class. This is why education is so crucial here in our work in Poland. Among our various projects we cooperate with Foundation Ukraine, joining our forces and employing intercultural assistants to support the education of refugee children in Polish schools. Furthermore, we provide support to Ukrainian youth by offering Polish lessons through the Language Supp Ukraina, developed by Foundation Nativated. Already more than 6500 individuals have participated in those classes. #outofschoolchildren #displacedchildren #ukrainianchildren #advocacy #report

Since February 2022, significant changes have taken place in Ukraine, which have affected the lives of many people, including LGBTIQ+ communities - these are changes in the worldview of the absolute majority of our citizens. One of the noticeable consequences of such changes was the actual replacement of the main language for international communication and the growing interest in learning English, which opens up new opportunities for professional and personal development, as well as for integration into the international society. In response to this growing demand, ALLIANCE.GLOBAL has launched professional English language courses in Dnipro and Lviv. These courses aim not only to improve the level of English but also to create a safe space for communication, support and exchange of experiences among LGBTIQ+ people. We understand how important is the possibility of free and open learning in conditions where everyone can be themselves. It is important to note that professional English courses conducted by our volunteers are also held in our "safe spaces" in Poltava, Kharkiv, and Cherkasy. We are sure that these courses will help not only to learn the language but also to strengthen our community in different regions of Ukraine. Join our initiative, because together we create a space where everyone can develop, gain new knowledge and feel supported. The assistance is provided by the ALLIANCE.GLOBAL, Public Organization in cooperation with the Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp (DRC) thanks to funding from the European Union through its Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations. 𝗨𝗼𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗴𝗲𝗲𝘀 Last week was World Refugee Day, a time for us to reflect on the many challenges facing the world's 114 million refugees. One of their greatest challenges is the lack of higher education opportunities providing them with a path forward to a better life. #UoPeople is proud to serve over 16,500 refugees – more than any other university in the world. However, the need for these educational “lifelines” is greater than ever. That is why, UoPeople is pledging to enroll 25,000 refugee students by 2030. Our pledge is in support of the UN Refugee Agency’s 15by30 initiative which aims to enroll 15% of the world’s university-aged refugees by 2030. Currently only 7% of refugees have access to higher education – far below the 40% average of non-refugees. To help achieve this goal, I am urging each of the world’s 31,000 institutions of higher ed to enroll 15 refugees. Universities can easily enroll 15 additional students without a major impact on their budgets. If UoPeople can enroll more than 16,500 refugees, surely other universities around the globe can open their doors wider to provide similar opportunities to these individuals in need. Wherever you are in the world, if this is your wakeup or stay awake cup, take a minute to share #CoffeeWithShai. If you believe in what we do, please like this video and repost it. #refugees #educatingrefugees #collegesanduniversities #highered #onlinelearning #highereducation #syrianrefugees #ukrainianrefugees #afghanrefugees
