“This is a significant divestiture. That's because (radio's) no longer a viable business” claimed the head of Bell Media’s regulatory affairs in closing half of its stations, leaving employees remaining in Bell’s radio stations with zero support. A few months earlier the same thing was said by Bell’s CEO about national news cuts that have impacted more than half of the staff, and not surprisingly morale has plummeted in those still trying to make journalism happen: “the business model is dead”, he said. Does Bell not being able to run them as businesses with sufficient profit for BCE mean they’re no longer viable businesses? Not necessarily. In fact many radio stations in Canada do fine by investing locally. And Global News is increasingly a profit center for its parent company as it explores new revenue streams Bell Media ignores. So Bell, if radio and news are “no longer viable businesses” to you, how will you operate what little remains? Any self examination here? Any plan of how to do things differently that builds future revenue and doesn’t just rely on more future cuts?
