The Aspen Institute identifies three pillars for positive youth development: 1) positive and sustained relationships with adults, 2) supportive culture and climate and 3) youth voice and choice. Each of these is both empirically supported as well as present in ancestral wisdom from countless cultures. As the environmental movement begins to merge an emphasis on data with a look towards ancestral cultures when searching for more sustainable ways of living in relationship with our environments, I wonder why we don't ask the same questions in education. After all, aren't "21st century skills" (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity etc.) the capacities that ancestral cultures cultivated (and continue to cultivate) in order to sustain thriving societies for thousands of years? At Ball for Life Oakland (www.ballforlifeoakland.org), we are constantly learning from both the newest research and the most ancient wisdom. Where these two mountains meet is where we find both inspiration and direction to create sport and play based programming proven to enhance Social Emotional Learning and feelings of belonging. We invite anyone and everyone to join us in taking a data informed AND ancestral wisdom informed approach to providing all youth with nourishing, and transformational youth development programming.

Step 9 goes beyond simply saying "I'm sorry." This step is about taking tangible actions to right the wrongs we've committed. This step requires humility, courage, and a willingness to confront the past–no matter how scary it may seem. By making amends, individuals in both AA and NA are able to demonstrate commitment to living differently and restoring trust with those we’ve hurt. Step 9 isn’t a one-and-done process. Throughout our life-long recovery journey, we must stay vigilant and committed to living in harmony with the principles of recovery–which means we must always be willing to make amends as future opportunities arise.
