Excited to read key insights from the newly released "Ocean of Opportunities" report by the United Nations, which underscores the incredible potential of #seaweed. This comprehensive report highlights how seaweed farming is a powerhouse for sustainable development, offering solutions to some of the most pressing global challenges related to global food supply, biodiversity and climate resilience. The report emphasizes the role of seaweed in bolstering coastal defenses against climate impacts, enhancing ecosystem integrity, and supporting communities in maintaining their livelihoods despite changing climate conditions. The seaweed industry also offers unique opportunities for economic empowerment, especially for women, by integrating them into all levels of the value chain. Also exciting to read the success of Catchgreen's work, seeking to replace traditional plastic ropes with biodegradable alternatives. I am proud to see these global insights mirrored in Plan International's Conservation and Sustainable Management of Coastal and Marine Ecosystems (COSME) project in Coastal Kenya, where in partnership with Cascadia Seaweed, we collaborate with women-led seaweed groups to harness the benefits of seaweed farming. "Indigenous knowledge is key to sustainable food systems" Indigenous peoples play a crucial role in food production systems through their extensive knowledge of biodiversity, sustainable agricultural practices, and the cultivation of diverse crops. They have historically acted as foragers, growers, and shapers of nature, developing food systems that are resilient, sustainable, and adapted to local conditions. Their traditional knowledge encompasses the cultivation of a wide variety of crops and the use of local resources, which has been essential for maintaining food security in their regions. Despite their significant contributions, Indigenous communities often face power imbalances and exploitation in the context of modern agricultural practices. Their knowledge has frequently been overlooked or dismissed, particularly during events like the Green Revolution, which prioritized high-yield monocultures over diverse, locally adapted systems. This has led to biodiversity loss and increased vulnerability to climate change. Today, there is a growing recognition of the importance of integrating Indigenous knowledge into contemporary agricultural research and practices. Collaborations that involve Indigenous peoples in the research process, allowing them to lead projects and share in the benefits, are essential for creating equitable and sustainable food systems. Their ecological knowledge is invaluable for addressing challenges such as climate change, pest resistance, and soil degradation, and can guide the development of climate-smart food sources from underutilized plants and wild relatives of crops. They are a cornerstone for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬: The report explores innovative financing models like blue bonds and blended finance, mobilizing investments for sustainable aquaculture, marine conservation, and climate-resilient fisheries. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 & 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Overfishing, climate change, and pollution pose significant challenges. Our report underscores the need for robust regulatory frameworks, pollution control measures, and sustainable practices to mitigate these issues. 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Effective policy interventions are crucial.
