Torbay Council’s Cabinet is set to agree the formation of a tripartite partnership between us, Arts Council England and Paignton Picture House Trust. If Cabinet approve the request at their meeting on Tuesday 26 November, the partnership will work together to deliver the full restoration of Paignton Picture House as part of the regeneration of Paignton Town Centre. The agreement would see the Council taking more of an active role in the delivery of the restoration project which got underway around 10 years ago. The Paignton Picture House is one of Europe’s earliest purpose-built cinemas. Built in 1914, the Grade II* listed building closed its doors in 1999. Since the formation of the Paignton Picture House Trust in 2013, the community has worked to save the iconic building and progressed with plans to create a vibrant and community cultural hub. This article beautifully captures the fusion of art and life within domestic spaces, resonating deeply with my interest in creating flexible, modular living units that serve as residences and performing art venues. Integrating artistic expression into daily life—whether through intimate gatherings, curated exhibitions, or collaborative performances—aligns perfectly with my vision of adaptable spaces that inspire creativity and community. Seeing this growing trend of blurring the boundaries between living and exhibiting is visionary.

Because of Houston’s size, global impact, and deep work that is being done, it is good to see writings focused on aspects in the public art sector. Houston’s civic art program has achieved substantive results based on access, transparency and equity. The City’s civic art program has been centralized and over the last four years our first manager has focused the work, created and clarified policy and practice, and reframed our relationship with our primary contractor. Works entering the city’s Collection since 2022 have been hyperlocal in centering Houstonians and our stories. A focus on educational opportunities, feedback, and documentation presented by artists has broadened the understanding of process and structure. Seeking panelists with equity work as a part of their professional practice and restructuring commissioned artists payments have led to an increase in artworks by first-time civic art artists. In Gulf Coast’s latest issue, Houston-based artists are lifted up and multiple challenges within the sector are detailed. I’d like to thank the writer for their work in the Houston civic art landscape, identifying challenges that we continue to face, and continued advocacy for the sector. I look forward to many more deep dives into the civic art sector and the “inspiring and exciting movement towards greater heterogeneity in (Houston) public art collection across various levels.” The article can be found here, https://lnkd.in/gQYQsjKv #houston #visithouston #civicart #publicart #equity

Defending Local Identity: A Stand Against External Architectural Influence "It grieves me to think that we require an American justice system in Wimbledon." This response to the proposal for a Frank Gehry-designed concert hall underscores the discontent some feel about an extraordinary foreign architect imposing his vision on a place we call home. While Gehry's vision for a state-of-the-art music center promises to transform Wimbledon and enrich London's cultural life, it is seen by many as an affront to our collective security and the greater good. The idea that an outsider, however talented, can dictate the architectural landscape of our community is troubling. This project, far from being a unique opportunity, represents a challenge to our local identity and autonomy. Our community deserves development that respects and reflects our values, traditions, and needs, rather than surrendering to external influences that may not align with our collective interests. #LocalIdentity #ArchitecturalIntegrity #Wimbledon #CommunityValues #CulturalAutonomy #PreserveOurHeritage #LocalVoicesMatter #ArchitecturalSovereignty #ProtectOurHome #ResistExternalInfluence

Chicago, widely known for its beloved public art installations, will be receiving a new slate of public works timed to the upcoming #DNC. GERTIE's “Next Stop: Chicago” is among the infrastructure-related projects by emerging artists and designers coming to Chicago next week. Gertie has awarded more than $400,000 in grants to seven community-led projects along the Chicago Transit Authority’s Green Line (which connects Chicago’s West and South Side to the convention locations and downtown) examining the nature of infrastructure and its importance for historically marginalized communities, especially post-pandemic. The initiative highlights the under-recognized work of communities along the CTA's Green Line — whose development have been bolstered by essential infrastructure in the form of public transportation, housing, and the creation of density to promote business and economic vitality. Further to earlier post, the following piece appeared in the G and M yesterday. Many, many thanks for all the very kind notes below, and the personal encouragement. I also appreciate deeply how much caring there is for this great national institution, The NGC/MBAC. https://lnkd.in/gUtxyuRC

I've seen/read stories like this to ask how financially wise are these "colleges and universities"? If you have endowments worth $billions, in down-slow-low inflow to addicted funds, you lean your #expenditures, tap &/or take #profits from #investments You don't sell #assets that if you stay in #education biz you'll always need housing... #RE-valuations go up & down, #assets stay or ought to! Who is advising these #college & #university #boards & #pres.; #realtors for #commission?
Many colleges and universities are selling prized assets like housing complexes, mansions, apartments and even art, as they struggle to stay afloat. Valparaiso University made the decision to sell three paintings including one Georgia O'Keeffe painting to fund a renovation of its freshman dorms. Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington is set to sell one of its original buildings, Kerry Hall, amid an enrollment decline of 39% over the past decade.
