China’s Hydrogen Infrastructure: Recent Status and Insights
By the end of June 2024, China has 426 operational hydrogen stations, including both fixed and mobile facilities. Notably, 19 new hydrogen refueling stations were established in the first half of 2024 alone. (Source: Hydrogen Energy Industry Promotion Association)
Guangdong Province leads the nation with 68 stations, followed by Shandong, Hebei, Jiangsu, Hubei, Zhejiang, Shanxi, and Henan, each with more than 20 stations. Meanwhile, Beijing, Shanghai, Sichuan, Anhui, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, and Chongqing each host between 10 and 20 stations, while the remaining provinces and cities have fewer than 10.
Recent research and observations by Shentou Hydrogen highlight a steady shift in China's hydrogen market strategy. Initially, the infrastructure primarily supported smaller stations catering to passenger cars. However, the focus has now shifted toward larger hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) with a daily capacity of at least 2 tons of hydrogen. These stations, designed to be more economically viable and to drive the industrialization of hydrogen, specifically serve commercial vehicle fleets like H2 trucks or buses, particularly in concentrated industrial hubs where hydrogen supply and demand are substantial.
