🤝 Putting Mobile Phone Data to Work - Theory, Tools, and Tactics: We deeply care about turning data into insights and implementing solutions that meet the needs of our users, from NSOs and government ministries/agencies to development and humanitarian actors in low- and middle-income countries. 🚀 Yesterday, at the 8th UN International Conference on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics in Bilbao, we presented our latest developments and recommendations for addressing bias in mobile operator data to produce robust and representative estimates on population distribution and mobility. 🌎 With our partners from The World Bank, the International Telecommunication Union, and the UN-CEBD task team on mobile phone data, we also discussed the road map and core components to take into account when setting up mobile data initiatives. We look forward to continuing our work in this space and ultimately expanding the use of mobile operator data for good and official statistics. #PartnershipsForTheGoals #data4dev #bigdata #mobilityinsights

Bilgecag Aydogdu presenting our work on #mobile data to predict displacements at the #DataforPolicy2024 conference. Mobile data come in different flavors, and has a lot of potential, but good regulations and collaboratives should be in place for safe, trustworthy, and sustainable usage of such sensitive data sources.
📱 Exploring Mobile Data for Anticipating Displacements 📱 At the recent #DataforPolicy2024 conference, Bilgecag Aydogdu, and Albert Ali Salah from Computing and Information Sciences, Utrecht University, Dr. Özge Bilgili, Interdisciplinary Social Science, Utrecht University, and Suphi Güneş, Turkcell Technology, presented their insightful paper titled 📄 "Mobile Phone Data for Anticipating Displacements: Practices, Opportunities, and Challenges." 📋 This paper delves into the use of anonymized and aggregated mobile phone data (MPD) for anticipating displacements due to natural disasters and conflicts. It reviews the entire process—from acquiring and processing MPD to analyzing it for predicting and responding to both internal and cross-border displacements. 💡 Discover how mobile data can transform our approach to managing displacements and the accompanying challenges. 📹 Watch the full presentation here: https://lnkd.in/exwd3ct3 🎥 To watch all Data for Policy 2024 presentations: https://lnkd.in/gTDcZ2sm #DataScience #MobileData #Displacement #MigrationResearch #PolicyMaking #DataEthics #AnticipatoryAnalysis #DataforPolicy

About that exponential mobile data growth... https://lnkd.in/dHQ7dKgH [ht Iain Morris] As I understand it, some of the recent decrease in Elisa's mobile data traffic is attributable to new compression algorithms, but a few more quarters should indicate whether that was a transitory impact or just a contributor to a broader slowing / decline in data volumes.

Responsible data use is a business imperative, but do you really know what it means? Data&Storage Asia consulted the experts, and we not only got some great insights to define this seemingly abstract concept, but also some practical recommendations on how to actually operationalise responsible data use. And in an era when data is said to be "the new oil," we believe organisations need to be guided on how to use this most valuable asset. PS. A big thank you to the experts at Sophos, Wasabi Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Affinidi, GreaterHeat, and Ping Identity for the wonderful insights!
