🌊🐟 Exciting News from MarFishEco! 🌍📈 We're thrilled to share insights from our collaboration with WWF on a project focused on the Socio-economic Impacts of the EU Common Fisheries Policy. 🎣📊 As the EU stands as a key player in global fisheries, it's crucial to evaluate the performance of its fishing fleet within the framework of the Common Fisheries Policy. Our study, conducted in 2021, sheds light on the complex dynamics of socio-economic factors in EU fisheries. Key findings revealed incomplete progress towards sustainable fishing and economic efficiency, urging policymakers to adopt a more holistic approach. 🔄📈 This report underscores the need for robust metrics and stakeholder engagement to drive meaningful change. Our vision aligns with WWF's commitment to marine conservation and sustainable livelihoods. 🌍🐠 For those eager to dive deeper into the report or discuss potential collaborations, reach out to us at projects@marfisheco.com! This week, delegates meet in Incheon, South Korea 🇰🇷 for the second Conference of the Parties of the Central Arctic Ocean Fisheries Agreement (CAOFA). 🌊 The DSCC will be attending the meeting as an observer for the first time. We will be advocating for a rigorous experimental fisheries protocol, including environmental assessments, protection of ridges, #seamounts and similar topographical features, and protection of all vulnerable marine ecosystems. CAOFA can safeguard one of the last great remaining wildernesses on our blue planet. 🐟 Find out more about CAOFA and why it’s so important: https://lnkd.in/eDcJG6Gm

🐟 Today, I had the pleasure of representing the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) at the side event on Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) on the sidelines of the 47th Session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), FAO HQ in Rome 🐟 Alongside colleagues from the Med Sea Alliance, The Nature Conservancy and Global Fishing Watch as well as representatives from the Cypriot government, we discussed the transformative potential of REM technologies to enhance transparency and improve fisheries management across the Mediterranean. REM brings valuable independent data to help tackle challenges like overfishing and IUU fishing. By drawing on real-world experiences, including pilot projects in Cyprus, we’re diving into practical applications tailored for the unique Mediterranean context, where small-scale fisheries play a pivotal role. Looking forward to continuing working with other fisheries experts to strengthen sustainable practices in our seas. Robust fisheries management are key to protect the health of our oceans, its biodiversity and the long-term sustainability of fisheries and the coastal communities that depend on them #EJF #REM #FisheriesManagement #MediterraneanSea #Transparency #SustainableFisheries #OceanConservation #IUUFishing

GREAT NEWS 🚨 4 EU Fisheries Advisory Councils coming out with a powerful statement to #StopDeepSeaMining. #Norway's actions stand in clear contradiction to the interest of the #FisherySector. 🇪🇺 🇳🇴 🔥 'The risks to #fisheries, in particular, are alarming. Several studies have documented the significant negative impacts that DSM could have on marine ecosystems, including fisheries. ' 🔥 'In light of the risks and in response to Norway’s recent decision to open their seabed for DSM, the European Parliament expressed concerns and stated that the impacts “could be detrimental to fish stocks and fisheries, and could impact the access of EU Member States’ vessels to the fishing grounds in the area”.' 🔥 'Express their strong support for the European Commission’s reaffirming its positionto advocate to #prohibit DSM until robust scientific evidence can demonstrate that it will not negatively impact marine ecosystems or jeopardise the #livelihoods of those who depend on the sea, including fisheries.' 🔥 'Ask all EU Member States to follow this advice to avoid taking premature steps into deep-sea mining. The risks of irreversible harm to marine ecosystems and long-term disruptions to fisheries are too great.' 🇪🇺 Communities in #Norway and elsewhere are thriving from a healthy ocean. #DeepSeaMining puts that at risk! As we are celebrating the international World Fisheries Day, we focus on Pacific Island Nations Leading the Way to Sustainable, Climate-Resilient Fisheries The Pacific region is charting a transformative course for its fisheries, integrating climate change adaptation into every aspect of management through the Oceanic Fisheries Management Project III (OFMP3). For the 14 Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the stakes are high: tuna fisheries provide not just economic security but also critical food resources. With climate change shifting fish stock distributions, the region is preparing to meet the challenges ahead. 🚨The LDAC has adopted today an advice jointly with the #NWWAC, #PELAC and #SWWAC on potential impacts of #deepsea #mining on fisheries with focus on Norway drilling plans in the Arctic. What are our key messages? 🌊🐟🚢🪸Reiterate our support for a prohibition on DSM while promoting development of robust science that can assess long term impacts of these activities on the marine ecosystems. 🔍🪸Precautionary approach to be applied and public interest (“for the benefit of humankind”) to prevail over any opportunistic behaviour looking for short term economic gain for few companies. Do not cause irreversible damage for the environment and people. 🛑 Ask the @EU_Commission to reaffirm its international commitment and declarations on a prohibition on DSM until robust scientific evidence on the long term impact on marine ecosystems. ⚠️ Call EU MS (and hopefully non EU as well) to avoid taking premature steps on DSM that might risk on irreversible harm. ♻️Promote implementation of circular economy strategies and reuse of materials. Do we really need to mine the seabed at all? Advice available for read and download here: https://lnkd.in/d6v6Xn25 Mo Mathies Paul Thomas Chloé Pocheau Merel Barbosa Matilde Vallerani

🤝 Client/Collaborators: International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) 📍 Location: Mediterranean 📅 Year: 2022 🚀 Project: Fisheries incentives and compensation schemes 🔍 Summary: MFE collaborated with IUCN in 2022 to delve into financial incentives applied to fisheries and environmental protection. The exploration sought to unravel the impacts of these incentives, providing valuable insights for preserving the Mediterranean's marine ecosystems. 🎣 Key Focus: As wild-capture fisheries play a crucial role in global food security, the study honed in on understanding the challenges threatening marine fish stocks and ecosystems' long-term sustainability. 🔍 Investigative Approach: MFE conducted a comprehensive investigation, intertwining a literature review of financial incentives in fisheries with key informant interviews featuring experts in conservation finance, resource economics, fisheries, and marine conservation. The culmination of insights and best practices was synthesized to guide future efforts, particularly tailored for the unique context of the Mediterranean. 🌊 Interactive Workshop: An engaging workshop acted as a meeting place for ideas, fostering discussions around key findings from the literature review and key informant interviews. This collaborative exchange enriched the understanding of the subject matter. 📬 For more information or to dive into the full report, reach out to MarFishEco at projects@marfisheco.com.
