Congress is considering a bill that would allow the Secretary of the Treasury to designate section 501(c) nonprofits as “terrorist supporting organizations” at the Secretary’s discretion, without requiring the Secretary to share their full evidence or reasoning with accused nonprofits. MANP encourages Maine nonprofits to contact Rep. Golden’s office and urge him to flip his vote to NO when H.R.9495 again goes to the House floor later this week. Digital exclusion traps people in poverty. It exacerbates social injustice and inequalities. The problem is bigger than many people realise, with over 1 in 4 young people (age 16- to 25-year) in the West Midlands having no access to a laptop or tablet at home and 20% of homes lacking Internet access. 📵🤯 Whilst some go without, others have more devices than they know what to do with. In the UK the equivalent of 60 devices are thrown away every second, contributing to the 1,598kt of e-waste annually.📱🗑️ Digital devices are manufactured in far-away places with processes that are energy intensive, carbon intensive and resource intensive. Repairing and refurbishing devices to keep them in use for longer are activities that can be done in our local communities with processes that are skill intensive, but are low-energy, low-carbon and require little or no natural resource. The precious metals that go into making computers and mobile devices are the same materials that we need to transition our energy and transport systems to renewables. As these resources become increasingly scarce, we cannot continue our take, make, waste approach to technology. We have in our own community in the #westmidlands, hundreds of thousands of people without access to devices and without digital skills. At ReCognition Circular, we think these people could be the foot soldiers in our local repair and refurbish army. That is why ReCognition Circular will be running training programmes to provide digitally excluded young people with basic digital skills, together with specific training on how to repair and refurbish IT equipment. This funding from The National Lottery Community Fund will help to make it happen. Let’s change the narrative together!
