The II CONJASP - Congress on Jackfruit and Its Potential, held at the UFRB - Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia , built upon the success of the first event, which took place in Ipiaú, Bahia, and laid the foundation for recognizing the jackfruit tree as a strategic resource for the region. This second congress established itself as a scientific and cultural platform aimed at highlighting the importance of jackfruit, an abundant and versatile fruit. During the event, researchers, producers, and students delved into discussions on the sustainable utilization of jackfruit, its applications in gastronomy, industry, and family farming, as well as strategies to add value to its production chain. Master's Degree in Administration and Public Policy - Innovation in policy instruments for the sustainability of local food systems through Payments for Ecosystem Services Abstract Given the intricate interconnections among agrifood systems, ecosystems, human beings, and anthropogenic activities, ensuring the sustainability of food supply chains emerges as a priority within international, European, and national policy frameworks. Concurrently, the market for plant-based proteins is steadily growing in Europe, underscoring the strategic importance of this sector, especially in terms of diversifying agricultural production in Liguria. Against this backdrop, this study provides a critical examination of the integration of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) into local development strategies to enhance sustainability of agrifood systems through the valorization of traditional and underutilized legumes in the Ligurian region, potentially yielding positive impacts on agricultural income, biodiversity, the provision of ecosystem services, the valorization of local traditions, and, ultimately, fostering cohesion between rural and urban areas. Employing the methodology by Cavalletti et al. (2023) and incorporating strategies, policies, policy instruments, and practices, this research endeavors to (i) verify the scientific underpinnings of PES; (ii) assess the presence of positive externalities; (iii) outline the policy framework and identify experimental sites; and (iv) speculate on potential funding sources. Through a critical evaluation of the CSR Liguria's initiatives, the study highlights synergistic interventions for the establishment of PES and identifies three legume crops as candidates for experimentation (White Bean of Pigna, Conio, and Badalucco; Moco from the Bormida Valleys; and Bean of Pignone). Given the multidimensionality of the subject, the research emphasizes that PES should be embedded within a comprehensive policy ecosystem. This approach extends beyond solely relying on consumer behavior to achieve food sustainability, underscoring the pivotal role of the State as an Investor in GPP, particularly concerning the realm of canteens. E-SPFdigit officially launched: Emergent soil, plant and food onsite digital services on chemical and biological contaminants 🚜🌱 E-SPFDigit project kicked off in Thessaloniki on October 8-9, 2024, hosted by Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH). The 18-partner consortium gathered to discuss the shared vision of transforming on-site digital tools for safer, more sustainable food production—from vineyards and vegetable farms to post-harvest processes. With a systemic approach and integrated piloting at the heart of the project, E-SPFdigit aims to revolutionize monitoring and decision-making in agriculture. The AI-driven tools will enhance real-time detection of contaminants such as PFAS, pesticides, and heavy metals, improving environmental sustainability and food safety across the entire production chain. Yesterday was 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲—a moment to reflect on the vital role science plays in shaping a sustainable future. At SPAROS, our story has always been intertwined with #science. We started as a start-up from Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) of the Universidade do Algarve, driven by a passion for advancing #AquacultureNutrition through solid research. From those early days, our journey has been grounded in a deep connection with academia, collaborating closely with universities and research institutes. This commitment ensures our innovations in fish nutrition are not just effective, but also scientifically sound and impactful. Together with our sister company, Riasearch, we combine strong scientific backgrounds and industrial experience to provide innovative solutions in aquaculture nutrition, health, and immunity. Today, we continue to engage in co-funded projects, support research through grants, and run internal initiatives that help us refine our feeds and services. Our focus remains clear: leveraging science to create practical, effective, and environmentally responsible nutrition solutions for aquaculture. The closing date is rapidly approaching to apply for our SEFARI Fellowship to support the Development of a Scottish Agriculture Knowledge Innovation System (AKIS). An AKIS is represented by the combined interactions, knowledge flows and innovative practices instigated between persons, organisations and institutions in the agricultural sector. Key stakeholders in the AKIS include supply chain actors, farmers, crofters, farm advisory services and advisors, land based business organisations, and research and education providers, including research institutes, universities and colleges. The Scottish Government is currently developing proposals for an AKIS in Tier 4, Complementary Support, of the Vision of Agriculture Support Package Beyond 2025 and considering how to best to improve cooperation and collaboration, where possible between the various actors operating in the sector. Tier 4 is a complementary support measure that focuses on people development and will come into operation on 1 April 2027, although certain elements may be trialled before then. The AKIS will help to underpin delivery of Tiers 1-3 of the Support Package (Base Payment, Enhanced Payment and Elective Payment) and help deliver the outcomes of the Agriculture and Rural Communities (Scotland) Bill 2023, the main delivery vehicle to achieve the Scottish Government’s Vision for Agriculture, for Scotland to become aa global leader in sustainable and regenerative agriculture. The Scottish Government intends that its support for Scottish agriculture is, where practicable, aligned with EU measures and policy developments. Therefore, we're delighted to provide support for this new Fellowship with Scottish Government.
