While I have been getting back into work, I have been looking back at client campaigns and their end-of-year performance, and in the world of New Zealand e-commerce the two major sale holidays are always the deciders of overall performance: Boxing Day and Black Friday, but which one is better for your business? While Black Friday has gained significant traction in recent years in NZ, Boxing Day remains a staple in the Kiwi shopping calendar. As businesses, it’s essential to understand how these holidays align with your products and your customer base to make the most of these opportunities. Black Friday has started to become a phenomenon in New Zealand. According to Stuff, Black Friday sales went up 2.8% in 2024. What’s fascinating is how it’s evolved locally--what used to be a single day of deals has morphed into a "Black Month" event, with retailers extending sales throughout November. Don't forget about Cyber Monday which occurs the Monday after Black Friday too. Boxing Day sales went up 13% in 2024 according to RNZ. Boxing Day is still the favourite retail sale for Kiwis. For many, it’s still the quintessential shopping day in New Zealand and now Boxing Day sales often extend until the 31st of December. The key takeaway? Tailor your sales strategy to your audience. Black Friday’s longer lead-up might work better if you're selling big-ticket items. For products with seasonal or post-holiday appeal, Boxing Day could yield stronger results. Timing, duration, and audience understanding are everything.
