Investing in #professionaldevelopment for #deans is pivotal in navigating the current challenges facing higher education leadership. With top positions experiencing heightened turnover rates, it's evident that a strategic approach is needed to mitigate this trend. Consider the statistics: the average tenure of university presidents has plummeted by 30% over the past 15 years, highlighting the urgency of the situation. Likewise, turnover trends among deans are concerning, with a quarter of business school deans serving for three years or less, and similar patterns observed in law and medical school deanships. Such rapid turnover not only disrupts the continuity of leadership but also hampers organizational progress and morale. Moreover, the financial ramifications are significant, impacting institutional stability and growth. By investing in the ongoing development of deans, institutions can proactively address these challenges. Equipping deans with the necessary skills, knowledge, and support systems not only enhances their effectiveness but also fosters long-term commitment and stability in leadership roles. Ultimately, prioritizing professional development is not just an investment in individuals but a strategic imperative for sustaining excellence in higher education. There are only 21 days left to enroll in Academic Impressions Essential Leadership for Deans conference happening in Denver, Co. In this week's edition of "From the National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) Archives**" I bring you: "The Relentless Improver: DoDEA's Education System" Find the full document here: https://bit.ly/3ZeHUPE In our 35+ year quest to study high-performing systems of education around the world, we have studied systems from Singapore to Estonia, and British Columbia to Massachusetts. Our intention? To deeply understand top performers' design and bring that understanding to practitioners nationwide. What a thrill, then, to shine a light on a system that spans the 🌎 . In 2022 DoDEA outscored every state on the #NAEP - our nation's report card - in both reading (where they've been a longtime top performer) and math (where they have consistently grown in the last decade). Of note: ✨ it did so with wide margins ✨ it showed the most progress in closing longstanding achievement gaps between white students and their Black and Hispanic classmates ✨ it did so while being the only school system to see its scores hold steady, and even rise somewhat, during the pandemic Anyone interested in being able to say the same for your system??? So much to unpack but, for today, let's focus on some #leadership takeaways: ➡ Clear Vision and Mission: Leaders articulate a unified vision focused on student achievement and well-being. ➡ Continuous Improvement: Emphasis on data-driven decision-making and iterative improvement processes. ➡ Professional Development: Investment in leadership training ensures administrators are equipped to meet evolving challenges. Given that none of these are NEW to us, what are the contributing factors? I finally found time to look at the June ITT applications for graduate teaching courses. Two points stood out: the increased percentage of applicants coded as from 'Rest of the World' and the seeming unattractiveness of teaching to new young graduates. This latter point may have longer-term consequences into the 2040s on the size of the leadership pool in the primary sector, where more than 10% of entrants can expect to end up in senior leadership posts. 2024 applicants 2023 Applicants RoTW 9010 6582 All 41682 36426 RoTW % Applicants 22% 18% Age 2024 increase on 2024 June applicants 23 or under 47 24 354 25-29 1089 30-35 1134 35-39 1045 40-44 898 45-49 357 50-54 242 55-59 95 60+' 40

We're excited to announce the third iteration of our Dialogue Series, "Unleashing the Leader Within," which will focus on leadership in the higher education sector. This roundtable is designed to bring together senior leaders in higher education to share their experiences, insights, and strategies with their peers. It’s an opportunity for thought-provoking discussions that can drive meaningful change in our institutions. This time, we have an esteemed panel of leaders who will dive into some of the most pressing challenges facing higher education today. We will explore questions such as: 🔍 How can we cultivate an inclusive campus culture while fostering a shared purpose among staff and students from diverse cultural backgrounds? 🔍 The skills and knowledge needed for success in the workforce are rapidly evolving. How can we prepare our graduates for the challenges of tomorrow? 🔍 How can we ensure that higher education institutions remain relevant despite technological advancements? 🔍 What leadership methods must university leaders employ to foster a culture of creativity and critical thinking within the faculty and student body? These discussions are not just theoretical—they are essential for shaping the future of higher education. We aim to inspire actionable strategies that participants can take back to their institutions, strategies that are not just ideas, but practical solutions to the challenges we face. The pass rates of graduate students on assessments like the School Leadership Licensure Assessment (SLLA) and the School Superintendent Assessment (SSA) can influence university and college rankings in several ways: Indicator of Program Quality: High pass rates on these assessments often reflect the quality and effectiveness of a university's educational programs in school leadership and administration. Universities with strong programs typically produce well-prepared graduates who perform well on these exams. This can enhance the institution's reputation and attractiveness to prospective students. Accreditation and Recognition: Accreditation bodies and educational ranking organizations may consider pass rates as a metric for evaluating the success of educational programs. High pass rates might contribute to positive evaluations and endorsements, which can boost a university’s ranking. Graduate Success: High pass rates can be seen as a marker of graduate success and employability. Schools that prepare students effectively for licensure exams often have better job placement rates and successful career outcomes for their graduates. This success contributes positively to the institution's overall ranking. Data for Rankings: Many university ranking systems include metrics related to student outcomes and program effectiveness. Pass rates on key professional assessments can be a significant data point in these evaluations. Institutions that perform well on these exams may see an improvement in their rankings as a result. Market Perception: A university’s reputation is partly shaped by the success of its graduates. High pass rates on crucial professional assessments can enhance the institution’s market perception, leading to increased applications and possibly higher rankings. In summary, strong pass rates on the SLLA and SSA can serve as indicators of a university’s program quality and graduate readiness, potentially impacting its rankings and overall reputation in the education field.
