Dr. Gina Dinallo (BSc, DVM) on oral pain in pets for #animalpainawarenessmonth: Many animals will continue to eat and drink through significant dental disease. They will try to shift food to the least painful part of their mouths to crunch and chew. Visible difficulty eating and prehending food, or truly stopping eating, is a late-stage sign. Signs of dental disease may include red gums (instead of pink), viewable tooth roots, grey/green plaque on tooth surfaces, or very bad breath. Patients with these signs may experience significant pain relief from a periodontal treatment and potentially extractions of severely unhealthy or damaged teeth. This can be pursued through a veterinary dentist or with your primary veterinarian. #momentsmatter #vetmedicine #vetemergencycare #vetspeciality #vetspecialists

Online Consultations in Veterinary Medicine: Convenience vs. Quality Care In today's fast-paced world, online consultations in veterinary medicine have gained significant popularity. There are many start-ups which are coming up with apps for such online Vet consultations. The convenience they offer to pet owners is undeniable – no travel, reduced wait times, and quick access to professional advice from the comfort of home. But as a veterinary surgeon, I can't help but question: Are these virtual visits truly in the best interest of our furry patients? Unlike human patients, our pets cannot verbally communicate their symptoms. A thorough physical examination often reveals critical information that may not be apparent through a screen. Palpation, auscultation, and other hands-on diagnostic techniques are essential in identifying underlying health issues that might go unnoticed in a virtual setting. While online consultations can be beneficial for follow-ups, behavioral advice, or minor issues, they should not replace in-person visits, especially for initial diagnoses or serious concerns. The tactile, sensory, and immediate nature of a physical examination cannot be replicated virtually. As we embrace technological advancements, it's crucial to strike a balance. Virtual consultations should complement, not replace, traditional veterinary care. Ensuring the health and well-being of our pets must always remain our top priority. #VeterinaryMedicine #PetCare #OnlineConsultation #Telemedicine #VeterinaryCare #PetHealth #AnimalWelfare

Did you know software can help build your list of differentials before you step into the exam room? At Devonshire Veterinary Clinic, INC, we’re using AI-powered software to review conversations between our veterinary technicians and animal owners. The software listens, pulls out key details, and generates a preliminary list of differentials for me to review before I meet the client. This small change has made a big difference: • I walk into the room better prepared, already thinking through relevant possibilities. • I spend less time in my head sorting differentials and more time focused on the client’s concerns. • It reduces the mental load of juggling diagnostics on the spot and allows me to focus on what I do best: listening and providing great care. It’s like having an extra set of clinical eyes working quietly in the background—prepping me to hit the ground running. AI isn’t here to replace us—it’s here to make us better. It’s a tool that enhances the care we provide by helping us think faster, focus deeper, and catch details we might otherwise miss. The result? Better outcomes for our patients, stronger relationships with our clients, and a more efficient, confident version of ourselves in the exam room. #VeterinaryInnovation #ArtificialIntelligence #VetMed #AIinPractice #SmartTools #VeterinaryCare VetSOAP Jason Szumski, DVM Vetcor Indiana Veterinary Medical Association
