Getting your team on board is just the first step—now it’s time to extend that commitment to our clients. 🌍 We know that this can often be one of the most challenging steps, and the third act of Design Declares focuses on integrating environmental and social impacts into every pitch, proposal, and project. Not every design can be carbon-neutral, but every project is an opportunity to make real progress. Ready to bring your clients on this journey? Let’s get started. #sustainabledesign #regenrativedesign #designdeclares #designforchange

Oh, I love this <3 Further, as I believe design should be life-centred (not just human-centred), what does the below look like through THAT lens? (I have some ideas, of course :)) #design #participation #sustainability #kindness #climate #ecology #systems #futures
The line below is the central thesis from a brilliant talk about the role of design and designers in relation to the climate emergency, and in particular what it might mean for designers to think of people as #citizensnotconsumers. I was supposed to be delivering this talk, at the Design Declares gathering in London, organised by the wonderful Jo Barnard. But I had to let Jo down - or so I thought. In stepped my brilliant colleague Andy Galloway, and what he put together is so awesome that I made him write it up and publish it. This central provocation is so important. "Co-design" as a process, the act of designing with people not just for them, is a critical part of this work. BUT it is not the whole - and it risks becoming a rabbithole into which designers disappear. Instead, for truly "ecological citizen" design (to use the language of a Royal College of Art project, led by Dr Robert Phillips, that both Jo and I advise), the outputs we aim for must also be participatory. In order to truly face the climate emergency, we have to be designing with the objective of unleashing the agency of citizens. Andy's beautifully simple statement of this as "designing participatory stuff" as well as "designing stuff in participatory ways" is just the start of why his talk is so great. He brought his own personal story in, and gave some seriously solid examples of what this expansion of agency looks like in practice. It's a hell of a talk. You can read it here: https://lnkd.in/eFidxmrf (And yes I am obvs kind of proud of the guy. But I am also a little bit annoyed. When you have to bail on something, your replacement should be good, but not THAT good, right?? 😂 )

I got to do some proper collaborative design with Joanne Kilcoyne and Katy de la Motte-Harrison yesterday and it was great. 💥 Challenging each other, disagreeing constructively, exploring silly ideas that, actually, led us to not-so-silly ideas the long way round... That last point is something more purely logical people sometimes struggle to understand. Why waste time talking about things that can't be done, or off on a tangent? Why can't we just skip this? Well, because brains are weird. And doing that gives us stepping stones to places we might not otherwise reach. "I'm just thinking aloud now, and this is probably nonsense..." is often where the best ideas begin. #design #creativity #ServiceDesign

Creative fields are often misunderstood and undervalued. Design is NOT: ❌ Making something "pretty" ❌ Art ❌ Expression ✔ Design is a way of thinking. Don Norman of NNgroup fame discusses the matter: #designcommunity #designthinking #creativity #designcareer
