Here’s a question. What’s mentoring to you? When I started off my career, the concept of a mentor was pretty alien to me. At that time, it was more about getting ahead and ahead, as fast as you can. How you get there seemed immaterial. But after about 10-12 years, I met my first mentor. A boss who was unlike any of my other bosses in the past. She amplified all that good leaders do: Practiced active listening Encouraged me to reflect Supported my ideas and… This might resonate with many of you: Gave me credit where credit was due. This was the first time I had been guided to speak to the CEO. To have confidence in my ideas. And given the responsibility of conducting interviews with CXOs - an invaluable aid in helping me better understand business perspectives. From her, I understood what it is to have someone believe in your potential. A warm heady feeling when you can feel quite alone in the corporate world. I thought of her recently. About her incredible ability to value people. She wasn’t the only mentor I have had. I have had two other women mentors who nurtured my potential, nudged, encouraged and supported me to challenge the status quo. But she was exceptional in helping me reframe years of self-imposed negative thinking. I didn’t have a fancy B-school degree. I had been forced to work at 17. I had always felt I was swimming against the tide, scared that unless I continued to swim, I would be swept away, and the world would find out that perhaps, I was quite an imposter. This mentor constantly challenged those beliefs. Helped me reframe those old moldy thoughts into fresh ones. Years later, I realized that she had invested in her own self-awareness as a leader too. And it made me realize that so many of us, especially women, seek mentors. Guides who can show us the light we often miss. Who can gently correct where we fail. It’s why at Breath Beings, we have a unique one-day program for mentors.
