Empowering Women: Breaking Barriers in Education and Entrepreneurship 👩🏫👩🍳👩🔬👩✈️👩⚕️Imagine and visualize a world where every girl has the opportunity to pursue their ambition, where women are equally represented in leadership positions, and where innovation prospers without limitations. This is the world we strive to create. In Nigeria, women face significant barriers in Education and Entrepreneurship. According to a report by World Bank, only 9% of women in Nigeria have completed secondary education, compared to 22% of men. This disparity has a ripple effect, limiting women's opportunities for economic empowerment and leadership. But, there is hope, by investing in women's Education and Entrepreneurship, we can unlock their potential and propel progress for all. Statistically, • Women make up only 30% of entrepreneurs in Nigeria. • Women-owned businesses in Nigeria are 34% less likely to obtain a loan than male-owned businesses. One solution to this is: Mentorship Program; which plays a pivotal role in empowering women. By connecting aspiring female entrepreneurs with experienced mentors, we can provide them with the guidance, support, and network they need to succeed. Together, we can create a world where every woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential. Empowering Nigerian Women: Bridging the Economic Divide In Nigeria, gender disparities continue to hinder women’s economic empowerment, even though they make up nearly half of the population. Women’s participation in the labour force remains significantly lower than men’s, due to systemic barriers like limited access to education and job opportunities. Women Impacting Nigeria (WIN) is at the forefront of tackling these challenges. Through comprehensive initiatives, WIN empowers women with essential skills via digital literacy and entrepreneurship training programs. These programs enhance women’s ability to thrive in the modern economy, fostering independence and resilience. Moreover, WIN provides access to microfinance and business development support, which is critical for women entrepreneurs aiming to start or expand their businesses. By advocating for gender equality and economic empowerment policies, WIN helps create an environment where women can succeed and contribute to economic growth. WIN’s efforts are not just about closing economic gaps—they’re about empowering Nigerian women to play active, influential roles in the country’s development. By championing education, entrepreneurship, and advocacy, WIN is creating lasting impacts that uplift communities and drive inclusive prosperity across Nigeria. Join us in supporting WIN and making a tangible difference in the lives of Nigerian women. #WIN #WomenEmpowerment #EconomicGrowth #InclusiveProsperity

Over the past few months, our team in Pakistan, led by Maria, our Gender Inclusion Specialist, has conducted extensive research on gender inclusion in the market. We were thrilled to collaborate with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on this important initiative. We've learned so much, and we wanted to share with you five key takeaways: 1️⃣ Inclusive lending with dynamic criteria: By making it easier to qualify for loans, we gave more people, especially women and those in rural areas of Pakistan and Uganda, access to credit products without increasing the number of people who didn’t pay back. 2️⃣ Tailored communication for different groups: Different ways of communicating worked better for different people—call centres were better for men, while women responded more to face-to-face introductions. Using traditional Urdu in Pakistan also got a lot more people engaged than using Roman Urdu. 3️⃣ Empowering female entrepreneurs: Women-owned businesses, particularly in Uganda where only half of the women had bank accounts, benefited greatly from our efforts, helping reduce the gap between men and women in loan amounts. 4️⃣ Ease of use driving usage: Loan activity skyrocketed in places like Uganda, thanks to easier access to the product and better communication. 5️⃣ Financial literacy is key: Many people didn’t understand financial products well at first, but our educational efforts, using familiar channels like Facebook and SMS, helped people learn and increased product usage. We’re excited to continue making strides toward a more gender-inclusive ecosystem in the weeks, months, and years to come at Kuunda. ✨ Feel free to comment below if you have any questions about our process! 👇🏾

On this week’s #SpotlightSeries, be inspired by Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University's mission to achieve gender parity in Nigeria's financial sector! LBS is partnering with Women's World Banking to increase the representation of women in senior leadership and executive positions within the financial services sector in Nigeria. This could potentially improve financial inclusion for women in Nigeria, including enhancing access to savings products for over 7.2 million unbanked and underbanked women. Closing the gender gap in women’s representation in leadership and decision-making positions within critical domains such as the economic and financial services sectors is critical to shifting systems to be more inclusive and work better for everyone. We applaud their vision in making the financial services ecosystem a place for women to work and thrive. LBS’s Olayinka David-West (she/her/hers) says it best in this video. Today nearly 120 million girls are out of school. Malala Fund works in regions where most girls miss out on secondary education. How cool is that! I recently met with Nabila Aguele in Nigeria. Nabila is the Chief Executive of Nigeria for the Malala Fund. Malala and Ziauddin Yousafzai founded the Malala Fund in 2013 to champion every girl’s right to 12 years of free, safe, quality education. The Malala Fund invests in education advocates and activists challenging the policies and practices that prevent girls from attending school in their communities. Nabila is now part of that journey! She is an impressive lawyer, public policy expert, board member, and gender equality advocate. A global citizen, Nabila grew up in Nigeria, England, Qatar, and Canada. She holds an MBA from INSEAD - like myself. A business school that keeps making a profound impact on both of us. Nabila also serves on the board of INSEAD. We discussed: The rise of Africa Empowering women Governance & Board work Leadership turnarounds Next generation impact initiatives It was a truly inspiring and thought-provoking meeting. I have learned a lot from the regular insightful conversations I have with business leaders, government officials, academics, and students. It provides: Fresh insights New dimensions Surprising viewpoints I am a strong believer in building my global networks through personal meetings. Do like Nabila! Imagine what you truly want to become, Pursue it with passion & deliver with impact. What is your dream? Be Bold. Be Daring. Be Different! #education #change #thoughtleadership
