Did you know it's National Apprenticeship Week?! https://lnkd.in/dyS95wm The Portland region boasts a strong system of apprenticeship programs, with employment in this sector increasing by 30% between 2019 and 2023. With a location quotient of 3, apprenticeship training is more than three times as concentrated in the Portland MSA as the national average.* *Employment concentration quantifies the concentration of employed workers in a region relative to the national average. It can reveal what makes a particular region “unique” in comparison to the national average. Apprenticeship training has a high employment concentration.

It’s National Apprenticeship Week, and we salute the skilled trades workers who got their careers started with an apprenticeship, and the employers who recognize the importance of these invaluable hands-on learning opportunities. With the help of these employers and the young men and women they train, the skilled labor gap can continue to close! #constructionready #constructionindustry #constructioncareers #skilledtrades #constructioneducation #handsonlearning

⬇️ Apprenticeship starts in Bristol have fallen by more than one fifth in the past decade according to new research, reports Charlie Watts for BristolWorld. 🔎 An investigation by the House of Commons Library found that 760 fewer apprenticeships enrolled in programmes last year than in 2012/3, a 22 per cent decline. 🎙️ Bristol MP Karin Smyth laid some blame at the feet of the Apprenticeship Levy, suggesting that it has "deprived students from disadvantaged backgrounds of the chance to learn vital skills". Her comments follow recent calls for the levy to be restructured, with funds diverted from higher level apprenticeships for older employees to programmes aimed at training young people on the lowest rungs of the employment ladder. #bristol #apprenticeships #houseofcommons https://lnkd.in/e3YrNAf2

New Report Calls for Action to Reclaim Apprenticeships for Young People A recent report from CIPD and Youth Futures Foundation sheds light on the need to prioritise apprenticeships for young people and reevaluate the skills levy to enhance training opportunities across various industries. The report suggests that the majority of employers are in favour of using apprenticeships to facilitate young people's entry into the workforce. However, survey findings show that current levy structure encourages employers to rebrand training for current staff, as apprenticeships to benefit from funding, thereby undermining the original intent of supporting young talent. The findings further call for proactive measures to reclaim apprenticeships for young people and improve social mobility, aligning with the broader goal of empowering young individuals to access meaningful employment opportunities. The full insights can be accessed through the CIPD and Youth Futures Foundation's official channels. https://lnkd.in/eyFUHp3P

First up on our apprenticeship overhaul deep dive: develop vital skills 💡🛠 The government has announced a new Growth and Skills Levy which will replace the existing apprenticeship levy and include new foundation apprenticeships. The government says these new apprenticeships will give young people a route in to careers in critical sectors, enabling them to earn a wage whilst developing vital skills. The new levy will also allow funding for shorter apprenticeships, giving learners and employers greater flexibility over their training than under the existing system – where apprenticeships must run for at least 12 months. The training eligible for funding under the new levy will develop over time, informed by Skills England's assessment of priority skills needs, the government adds. The Department for Education will set out further details on the scope of the offer and how it will be accessed in due course. #apprenticeships #ukbusinessowner #chesterbusiness

The government has announced significant changes to the UK’s apprenticeship system with the introduction of a new Growth and Skills Levy, set to replace the existing Apprenticeship Levy. This new levy, which includes foundation apprenticeships, aims to tackle Britain’s chronic skills shortages—a problem that has seen job vacancies caused by skills gaps more than double in the past decade, from 16% in 2011 to 36% in 2022, according to the Resolution Foundation.
