Today, I had the honour and privilege of being the guest speaker at the Murdered Abroad conference, in London and I’m still processing the emotions. It was both deeply moving and awe-inspiring to hear the stories of families who have experienced unimaginable loss—the murder of a loved one abroad—and to see the incredible resilience and determination within this community. The stories shared, the resilience shown, and the love and determination in the room was truly humbling. The conference highlighted the incredible work of Murdered Abroad in supporting families who have experienced the unimaginable tragedy of losing a loved one in the most horrific of circumstances. It’s a cause that doesn’t receive nearly enough attention, and the families affected often face overwhelming emotional, financial, and legal challenges without adequate support. Hearing firsthand from those who’ve walked this heartbreaking path was a powerful reminder of how much work still needs to be done to advocate for justice, ensure international cooperation, and provide care for these families. In the UK we now have Family Liaison Officers assigned to families of Homicide victims but if a loved one is murdered abroad the service the UK family gets is very mixed across the UK, with some forces deploying Family Liaison Officers and some forces doing absolutely nothing! This cannot be right! To those involved in this vital cause: thank you for your tireless efforts and for turning pain into purpose. Let’s all do what we can to support this work—whether it’s through donations, spreading awareness, or simply listening and standing in solidarity. Respect the Dignity of the Needy A Call to End Humiliating Practices. It's disheartening to witness a practice that undermines the dignity of the most vulnerable among us. Recently, there has been a trend where ministers distribute aid, such as flour, to the poor and then proceed to take pictures with them for social media. While the intention behind these actions may be to showcase charity and goodwill, it's crucial to recognize the unintended consequences.Every human being deserves respect and dignity, regardless of their socioeconomic status. By publicly photographing individuals receiving aid, we inadvertently subject them to humiliation and exposure. It's a stark reminder of their hardships, making them feel like objects of pity rather than individuals deserving of empathy and support.Therefore, I urge our leaders and all those involved in charitable endeavors to reconsider this approach. Let's prioritize the well-being and dignity of the less fortunate by extending help without exposing them to undue scrutiny. Acts of kindness should be genuine and respectful, devoid of any desire for self-promotion or validation on social media.Together, let's foster a culture of empathy, compassion, and dignity. Let's ensure that our efforts to support the needy uplift them rather than diminish their sense of self-worth. South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) recently awarded a $10,000 South Dakota Fund grant to Veterans Community Project (VCP). Funding will help support Veterans Support Services, which impacts the lives of Veterans at risk of and experiencing homelessness in the Sioux Falls region. VCP offers holistic support and community collaboration, guiding veterans and their families towards sustainable housing and improved well-being. VCP utilizes tiny homes to allow veterans to progress at their own pace, while receiving individualized care programs tailored to their needs, to prepare them for a self-sustaining life outside of VCP. Once a veteran is Permanent Housing Ready, they are healthy, well trained, have healthy relationships, steady income, and financial stability. This past week, the devastating fires in Los Angeles County have left countless lives forever changed. As I reflect on the aftermath, one question has been weighing heavily on my mind and on many others: "How can I help?" First, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who reached out to check on me—I’m now safe, and your kindness has meant the world. ❤️ But my heart aches for the thousands who have lost so much. Entire communities have been uprooted and lost, and while first responders and organizations are working tirelessly to bring relief, there’s still so much more to be done. For those who can help in any way—whether through donations, volunteering, or simply lending a listening ear—our collective efforts are needed more than ever. It’s especially important to check in on our veterans and first responders, who often face these challenges with quiet resilience. Devastations like these don’t just impact the immediate moment; they leave lasting scars that can weigh heavy over time. If you know someone in the LA area who may have been affected, please reach out. A phone call, a text, or even a simple “How are you doing?” can make a world of difference. Veterans and First Responders, in particular, may not always ask for help, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need it. Let’s stand together, not just today but in the days and weeks to come. It’s going to take all of us to help rebuild lives, restore hope, and ensure no one feels alone during this difficult time. My heart is with everyone impacted, and I’m here to do what I can. OWASP® Foundation OWASP Algiers Chapter Hackers for Charity Non-Profit List Objective: Identify regional non-profits in Morris County, NJ to contact to conduct training on how to find website software bugs & flaws and fix them. Criteria: Must be a regional non-profit in Morris County, NJ. Should be a legitimate 501c3 organization registered with the NJ Dept. of Consumer Affairs, Charity Navigator or GuideStar. Must have a website to test. Should have a low bureaucratic barrier to entry in order to avoid time-consuming multi-layered approval process. Consider locally hosted site in order to avoid third party issues (e.g., cloud providers) Consider veterans, food insecurity, health & human services, animal rescue & other organizations based on feedback from Team. Next Steps: Obtain approval on suggested non-profits from Team. Review/finalize letter to non-profits about Hackers for Charity.
