Species Spotlight! 🔦 Check out these cool facts about the Atlantic Puffin! Did you know Atlantic puffins shed their bill? The distinct colorful bill is actually only present in the summer. In the winter, puffins shed the colorful outer plates and tend to have a lighter grey face. These small seabirds spend most of their life offshore in the open ocean. They come ashore during breeding seasons where they nest in large colonies on islands where they can burrow and find shelter in crevices among rocks. Puffin pairs often even return to the same burrow together year after year. Puffins are also excellent divers and can dive to depths of around 200 feet! They swim underwater by flapping their wings for propulsion and using their feet to guide them. This ability allows them to prey on small fish species. When flying above water they tend to fly low over the ocean surface and beat their small wings rapidly, up to 400 times per minute! Have you ever seen a puffin up close?

🗺️I am happy to share with you this map that displays the migration routes and the main spawning areas of the  Atlantic Bluefin Tuna . 🐟 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐮𝐧𝐚  is the largest and most athletic tuna, which can grow to the size of a small car and travel nearly as fast as one too. An Atlantic bluefin starts out no bigger than an eyelash and grows to several hundred pounds and more than 6 feet in length in less than a decade. #Herring #fishery management needs a rethink, according to #Norwegian study 🐟 🔬 A new study by the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), Norway reveals that current herring #fisheriesmanagement practices fail to align with the actual migration patterns of various herring populations, potentially leading to serious consequences for the species. 💡 Lead researcher Florian Berg said that herring caught north of 62 degrees latitude - traditionally managed as Norwegian spring-spawning herring (NVG herring) - are, in reality, a mix of different herring populations. 💬 “Herring is one species, but it consists of several populations with distinct behaviours and adaptations... The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) #reduced the recommended #mackerel #quota for 2025 by 22% due to low spawning stock. 🌊🎣📉❗ 🗣️ "The #spawning #stock is dangerously close to the #precautionary #level. To maintain a sustainable population, fishing pressure must be reduced," Nøttestad Leif, mackerel stock manager at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), Norway. 🎯 2025 #recommended #quotas for species: 🔹 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐥: 576,958 tons. 🔹 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐰𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠: 401,794 tons.  🔹 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: 1,447,054 tons. 🔹 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐥: 75,545 tons.    📌 The experts noted that the lack of international agreements and fishing above the recommendations are challenges for most of the species. 📌 After a zero-catch recommendation for western horse mackerel for the last two years, researchers opened the quota again for 2025. 🟣🔵 Read full details here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dvNSKuKS

This ecological zone is characterized by open water away from the coast and the sea floor. Pelagic fish are typically found in the upper layers of the ocean and inhabit sunlit waters up to about 655 feet deep. Examples of pelagic fish include: #Tuna, #Marlin, #Swordfish, #Bluefish, and #Sharks. Sir David Attenborough lent his support in the early stages providing a voice over for the campaign film and welcomed the byelaw as a “landmark decision for the management of the UK’s coastal waters.” These survey sites are critical to monitoring the recovery of the kelp forest and changes in biodiversity since the local ban on trawling went into effect. Not only have we seen early signs of kelp recovery with kelp washing up on beaches for the first time in years, we’ve also seen an explosion in different marine species from undulate rays to smooth hound sharks, to whole schools of mackerel and black seabream returning in greater numbers. Rare ‘Phantom Fish’ Spawns in Northern Japan - https://lnkd.in/gPtGifXY HOKKAIDO, Apr 28 (News On Japan) - In northern Hokkaido, Japan's largest freshwater fish, the Itou, also known as the "phantom fish," has begun its spawning season, migrating upstream in local rivers. On April 26, using small underwater cameras, observers captured a female skillfully using her tail fin to scatter pebbles and create a spawning bed, while a brightly colored male in vivid red "wedding dress" repeatedly changed positions to encourage spawning. The Itou, a member of the salmon family, has historically reached lengths of up to 2.1 meters. Today, this species is found solely in Hokkaido and is classified as "Critically Endangered IB" on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List, indicating a high risk of extinction. The spawning activities of the Itou not only highlight their continued struggle for survival but also the ongoing efforts to understand and protect this elusive species.
