Yesterday, we marked National Sorry Day - a day to remember and acknowledge the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generations’. We recognise the resilience and strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the pain experienced as a consequence of these forced removals. Our vision for reconciliation is for all Australians to work together to address injustice and provide equality of opportunity, and to develop a vocational education and training (VET) sector that embraces the knowledge, leadership and strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2023-2025 acknowledges what our agency will do to achieve real and sustainable outcomes for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, employers, training providers and communities. As we reflect on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we can honour the survivors of residential schools and remember the children who never returned home. This day challenges us to learn from the past and continue the journey toward healing and justice. At BHP, we are committed to Call to Action #92 and to walking this path with Indigenous communities, guided by respect, partnership, and reciprocity. Our Canada Indigenous Partnerships Plan outlines a positive step forward in working together to create a shared, prosperous future. What’s the best antidote when you are not feeling a lot of hope for the world? Sit in a room full of deadly people committing to reconciliation and celebrating Indigenous excellence. Thank you to #ReconciliationAustralia for a fantastic RAP conference in Meanjin/Brisbane. It felt right to hold this conference here, to be there to support the organisations that are dealing with the frustration and devastation felt by the winding back of so much progress towards truth and treaty. There are now 3,300 businesses in Australia who have committed to a Reconciliation Action Plan. That’s 5 million workers in organisations making a public commitment to respectful relationships with First Nations people, and carrying the load of reconciling with them. I am proud to work for one of them. Ian Hamm MAICD FIPAA explained that the Aboriginal economy is worth $16.1bn. We heard the incredible work that Fiona Jose is doing with the CapeYork Partnership. Approaching their work using the simplest theory of change – that RESPONSIBILITY + OPPORTUNITY = CAPABILITY - they have built a strategy around the Closing the Gap actions to empower the people of Cape York to choose a life they have reason to value. We were encouraged to lean into the discomfort that truth and reconciliation can bring. Active allyship is being uncomfortable but doing it anyway. We are so often scared that we might do the wrong thing, that we do nothing. But a growling from the Aunties is done with love and a chance to really learn and build connection. I should know, my Aunties were good at a growling as well. Reconciliation is not just stories of hurt and despair; they are also stories of celebration, innovation and excellence. The Indigenous Governance awards (https://lnkd.in/gUs8dmXn) celebrated organisations and communities that have determined their own future and are showing how it is done for the good of the communities they are part of. Congrats to the winners and the finalists.  Did you know that Djarindjin community in Western Australia’s Dampier Peninsula operates a commercial airport – how cool is that?? I learnt quite a few new terms in the 2 days, the most important was COLONIAL LOAD – the requirements that colonial structures put on First Nations people to continuously and repetitively educate us. Can you imagine how boring that would be to answer again and again something that is available on Google?? It was wonderful to be with colleagues and the First Nations superheroes in this space. As part of National Reconciliation Week, the Winslow Group has launched its online Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Appreciation training. Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. As Australians, we can all be proud to be the home of one of the oldest continuous civilisations on Earth, extending back more than 65,000 years. Our Cultural Appreciation training course aims to increase employees’ awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their culture. Cultural awareness is a first step towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural competency, which refers to an ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. The focus of our training is to provide background and context, and then to move into appropriate behaviour from Winslow employees. Each person at Winslow is empowered to make good decisions to look after each other as family, be accountable to each other and be committed to operating safely. Our policy team advocate for marginalised communities and the voluntary, community, faith, and social enterprise (VCFSE) organisations that support them by: ➡ Breaking down the elements that make up an inclusive economy and explain how VCFSE organisations have an impact on building an economy that works for all ➡ Demystifying policy in a way that enables VCFSE organisations to understand how they can contribute to the development of strategy and policy in Greater Manchester ➡ Enabling the voices of low income and marginalised communities to be heard by policy makers and publish evidence to support these voices ➡ Working to ensure that the role of the VCFSE sector in Greater Manchester is understood, recognised, and valued by policy makers, sharing best practice and impact that is being delivered in the city region Find out how this looks in practice ➡

Now more than ever, it’s important for us to embrace reconciliation and support the prosperity of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people.   We’re incredibly proud of the latest iteration of our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), but our commitment extends far beyond this document.   Our vision is to walk together as equals - enhancing our collaboration with First Nations communities, nurturing the growth of First Nations people and businesses in the industry, and fostering awareness and respect for First Nations cultures throughout our business, guiding all team members on the path to reconciliation.   Now more than ever, actions speak louder than words.   Our Fitzroy River Bridge Project in WA exemplifies our genuine commitment, with strong relationships built with the community throughout the course of the project. Collaborating with Traditional Owners across the Fitzroy Valley, the project featured over 260 local employees, with 25% of construction hours worked by Indigenous Australians. Regular site visits were organised for local elders, aged-cared residents, and students to truly emphasise the importance of their involvement – the bridge belongs to them and their community.   Now, more than ever, let’s amplify unheard voices. It’s fantastic to see that our researchers are involved in several of the nine new projects supported in the first round of the #OneKingsImpact Fund. The projects unite people from across and beyond King's College London to focus on real-world solution development to some of the deep-rooted global issues we face today.
