Things I found fascinating this week... 🤓 We all have sources that spark our thinking at work, and since my early days in the design and building materials world, Edelkoort Inc Trend Union forecasts have been that for me. Lidewij Edelkoort’s insights into culture, aesthetics, design, and sustainability continue to inspire and spark my imagination. I recently watched the presentation by Rosa Pomar from the latest World Hope Forum Portugal and was fascinated to learn about the wool industry in Portugal and Europe, particularly wool’s unrealized potential. Here’s a surprising takeaway: Polyester holds 57% market share of fibre production, while wool makes up less than 1%. The result? Nearly 60% of European wool – about 3,000 tonnes – ends up burned or in landfills each year. With such a sustainable resource at our fingertips, this is a missed opportunity that raises an important question: why rely on petroleum-based fibres when we have excess supply of a natural alternative? This is an option worth exploring while we can, especially as several wool-producing sheep breeds face the risk of extinction. It was also intriguing to learn that wool can have applications in construction materials. With so much toxicity in our clothing, and in our built environments, it’s a reminder of how changing our perspectives and embracing natural fibres can lead to sustainable solutions across industries. For those interested in design, sustainability, and trend forecasting, I highly recommend checking out the World Hope Forum. There’s so much potential in rethinking our relationship with materials – and, with it, a renewed sense of hope for a sustainable future. #Sustainability #Fashion #CircularEconomy #WorldHopeForum #Innovation #DesignThinking #Wool https://lnkd.in/g5xinPJ4

This research article has been written by me in collaboration with Sarmad Salahuddin Mian & Hussain Jafri with the research foused on examining the furniture industry of Pakistan and particularly the carved furniture when compared to other region’s furniture that dates back to the pre Mughal era. The quantitative research aims at establishing the state of advancement in furniture design emphasizing the phenomenon of dispersed and atomized small-scale production establishments. The paper focuses on main areas of furniture production, and assesses the export capability of the industry. It raises issues like technology in the enterprise, lack of skilled employees and access to markets and also recognized that there is a dearth of literature on some provinces. Furthermore, the paper also deals with the concepts of sustainability and provide suggestions to improve competitiveness and future development in the global market.

Participating in the Yarn Expo Shanghai once again was an exhilarating experience, particularly since this time, I attended as a visitor after a long gap of five years. My last visit was in September 2019 as an exhibitor, right before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which put a halt to such events and travel for several years. Here are a few key takeaways from the Yarn Expo Summer Edition 2024: 1. **Scale:** The scale at which Chinese manufacturers are ramping up their production is staggering. Competing with them is becoming increasingly challenging as they continue to push boundaries in capacity and efficiency. 2. **Innovations:** Year after year, the Chinese market introduces groundbreaking technologies, products, and innovative approaches, particularly towards sustainability. One of the most remarkable developments I encountered was a company producing yarn from carbon emissions. Their plan to produce 30,000 tons of yarn using 10,000 tons of CO2 captured from factories—which equates to the carbon absorption of 1 million trees or planting trees across 15,000 acres of forest—is simply astonishing. The scale and vision behind such projects are truly beyond imagination. 3. **Focus Areas:** Significant investments are being poured into Vortex technology, showcasing China’s commitment to staying ahead in the textile industry. The sheer magnitude of these investments underlines why China is often referred to as the "factory for the world." 4. **Quality:** The fabric section at the expo was another eye-opener. The quality, finish, designs, and colors on display were exceptional. I was particularly impressed by the wide range of functional and outdoor fabrics, each with distinct competitive advantages. Overall, it was a highly educational experience that promises to reshape the textile landscape in the years to come.

Whilst in London last week I visited the Andreu World showroom in Clerkenwell. Thank you Samantha Allan, José P., Alejandro Pardo. Since joining the industry 20+ years ago, Andreu World has always been a favourite of mine. Standout for their designs, attention to detail, quality and craftsmanship. On this visit, further reinforcing my positive sentiment toward Andreu World, I learnt that they also have a cool story worth sharing. >> Almost 70 years from its humble beginnings, the heritage and tradition of the business remains family-owned and independent. A rarity with the current industry trend of mergers and acquisitions, where original values and culture are at risk of getting lost when 'swallowed-up' or partnered by a larger brand. >> All the wood used in their interior products is grown in their own sustainably managed Mixed forests. Cultivating Ash, Oak and Beach wood in accordance with Forest Stewardship Council protocols, including planting, harvesting and drying. >> Development of their own materials and fabrics. 100% recycled and 100% recyclable EcoPure® plastics, a novel thermopolymer; and their Circular ONE® fabric obtained from yarn made from plastics from PET bottles and textile waste. >> For the past 15 years they have held an annual international design competition geared towards young designers. Investing in talent that will build our future. Since inception Andreu World has been placing sustainability at the heart of their activities. Working to preserve the biodiversity of the regions in which they operate, reducing the amount of waste produced and acting in a transparent manner to ensure they do not exploit the planet or its people. Their approach points to a future where design and sustainable development become common practice. #furnituresolutions #productdesign #sustainability #circularity *Disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed in this post are solely my own and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of JLL and Tétris. This post is based on my personal experience with Andreu World and should not be construed as an official endorsement. Szymon Niedziela and Eryk Stefanowicz visited the Furniture Contract and Furnitech at Ptak Warsaw Expo this week and wish to impart market insights from this sector. - Poland ranks as the third-largest furniture exporter globally, holding a 5.4% market share, following China and Germany. - The sector experienced a 10% expansion in 2022, as per the PKO BP Report, attributed to the influence of COVID-19. This surge was propelled by a surge in investments in home furnishings, particularly office furniture. - The anticipated growth in the coming years is approximately 6% as per Statista. 💡Noteworthy is the dominance of Millennials in vital market sectors, as they invest in home furnishings and emerge as discerning consumers in online and offline shopping domains. To meet market demands, the furniture sector should focus on: ✅ Exceptional product presentation using VR, AR, and 3D technologies ✅ Customisation of products with easy configuration as a part of customer journey ✅ Optimize the product's look and feel to leverage a blend of online and offline sales channels. 💡 We conducted an analysis of the UK online furniture market using Magento and Hyvä . Feel free to download the report on e-commerce platform performance within this sector. Download the UK Furniture Industry Performance Report ⇨ https://lnkd.in/ehaSNRKH
