Exciting News! In just two weeks, we’ll be kicking off our HorizonDECADES board and consortium meeting at the University of Groningen, hosted by Prof. Marco Fraaije! Our agenda is packed with valuable content and opportunities for connection. Over the first two days, we’ll dive into board meetings and engage in presentations from our PhD students, who’ll share the results of their recent research. Starting on the afternoon of Day 2, we shift focus to an in-depth lecture series, beginning with data-driven directed evolution of enzymes. The learning continues on Day 3 with inspiring talks on the digitalization of bioprocesses, rational protein design, and innovative methods for racemate resolution via crystallization. These sessions are designed to boost our skills and open new possibilities in our fields! And the lectures don’t stop there—we’re also adding hands-on computational protein engineering training and workshops for scientific presentations…but we won’t reveal too much just yet! It’s not all about hard work—we also have a fun excursion planned for Day 5! Plus, lunches and dinners together will be a perfect chance to unwind and strengthen our connections. Looking forward to the week ahead and everything we’ll accomplish together! #MSCA #HorizonDECADES #REA #ResearchImpactEU #H2021 #Research #Innovation #DES #Catalysts #Sustainability #biocatalysis #Science #PhDLife #DeepEutecticSolvents #DES #EU #HorizonEurope #Networking #ScienceAndInnovation #Groningen

👋❗ Tomorrow, Thursday June 6th, Iñigo Urteaga (Ikerbasque Research Fellow at #BCAM) will participate at the CIC bioGUNE - Ikerbasque Scientific seminar series for emerging group leaders in Euskadi. The talk will be on generative, probabilistic machine learning for biomedical applications: incorporating scientific knowledge into data-driven learning. Talk abstract: This talk explores the power of probabilistic and generative machine learning in unlocking data-driven insights, within and beyond the biosciences. We will explore the foundations of probabilistic and generative learning, emphasizing their ability to quantify uncertainty in data ---crucial for scientific rigor. We will argue that probabilistic and generative modeling enables incorporation of scientific knowledge into machine learning models. 🩸 💻 🔬 Drawing on his recent and ongoing research, Urteaga will showcase two success stories within the context of female menstrual health. These examples demonstrate the flexibility of integrating domain-specific knowledge into machine learning, paving the way for broader applications within the biosciences. By bridging the gap between observed data and scientific knowledge, we unlock the potential for more robust and interpretable models, generating new scientific understanding. T4BBI Science News We are pleased to announce the publication of the inaugural article "Parageobacillus thermoglucosidasius as an Emerging Thermophilic Cell Factory," coauthored by one of our ten Ph.D. researchers Panos Kopsiaftis, who is working for the industrial Partner Corbion in the Netherlands and the Academic partner Wageningen University & Research. "This review explores the potential of the thermophilic microorganism Parageobacillus thermoglucosidasius for utilization in bio-based processes. P. thermoglucosidasius demonstrates a versatile metabolism, enabling the degradation and utilization of the hemicellulose component in lignocellulose. Moreover, it possesses the ability to convert carbon monoxide (CO) into metabolic energy." "The growing attention around P. thermoglucosidasius has increased the number of molecular tools available for metabolic engineering of this species, and ultimately could lead to the development of cell factories with industrial relevance." Congratulations to Panos and his colleagues for contributing a most interesting review to the open world of science! Read the full article to explore the potential of this thermophilic microorganism and its implications for the advancement of biobased industries.
