AUTONOMOUS TECHNOLOGY: UK and Japan host workshop to accelerate #maritime autonomy UK-based Lloyd's Register (LR) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) have hosted a four-day workshop in Japan to accelerate the development of an assurance framework for #maritimeautonomy and instigate the development of appropriate regional and international regulations. 🌟 Autonomous Ships 2024: A Promising Start in Sunny Copenhagen! 🌟 We’re excited to officially launch the Autonomous Ships 2024 Conference today, bringing together 100 industry professionals in beautiful Copenhagen. Highlights from the morning: - Malene Axelsen Mundt, Director of Maritime Regulation and Legal Affairs at the Danish Maritime Authority, warmly welcomed attendees to kick off the event. - Keynote by Professor John McDermid (University of York) explored Assurance and Regulation for Autonomy and AI in Maritime Applications. He shared insights from the Centre for Assuring Autonomy (CfAA) and the Assuring Autonomy International Programme (AAIP), highlighting Safe Operating Concepts, Requirements, and Performance Processes. The first technical session on Regulation, moderated by Erik Ingolf Tvedt (Danish Maritime Authority), featured: - Alexandros X.M. Ntovas (University of Southampton): On the IMO MASS Code, UNCLOS, and the human element in autonomy. - Signe Jensen (Simac): On the importance of knowledge sharing, competency requirements, and societal acceptance of unmanned maritime transport. - Marina Lesse (Naval Postgraduate School): On legal gaps in uncrewed systems, raising questions like “What does it mean to ‘navigate’?” The session wrapped up with a lively and interactive panel discussion, paving the way for more engaging discussions over the next two days. This week we had the privilege to participate in the #SPINE project demonstration event, hosted by MSE International at the University of Plymouth. The event marked a pivotal moment in maritime innovation, showcasing the incredible progress in autonomous systems connectivity, communication and port energy modelling. A key highlight was the on water demonstration of autonomous vessel technology, a leap towards a more sustainable and decarbonised shipping industry. As part of the SPINE consortium, we played a key role in developing and testing these groundbreaking solutions. Special thanks to Lewis Seymour-Pugh for overseeing our involvement, and to all partners in our consortium, Frequentis and MarRI-UK for their collaboration over the past two years.
