Something I have been working on/thinking about over the past years: - How can Development Cooperation effectively support CSOs / regional organisations in developing/ and or leveraging on (tech) based solutions in line with their mandate around peacebuilding, in particular to advance Early Warning and Response Systems in West Africa? - How can we integrate the analysis of "online" conflict dynamics into Early Warning Systems? - What are necessary steps to reduce polarisation online and offline? Really grateful for the journey so far advancing the discourse around digital peacebuilding and Digital Governance in West Africa through the great partnership with Build Up ^
🌍 In a significant step towards peacebuilding, the ECOWAS Commission, supported by the “Support to ECOWAS Peace and Security Architecture and Operations” (EPSAO) project, hosted a workshop on digital conflict transformation in Abuja. This event aimed to empower Civil Society Organizations in utilizing digital tools for #peacebuilding efforts in the ECOWAS Region. Led by Build Up, the workshop equipped participants with skills to leverage digital platforms and social media analysis for crafting effective peacebuilding strategies. 🚀✨ Dr. Onyinye Onwuka, Head of Mediation and Coordination of Regional Political Affairs, Directorate of Political Affairs at the ECOWAS Commission highlighted the workshop’s role in generating valuable insights for driving community change. This initiative marks a crucial endeavor in exploring digital solutions to promote peace in the ECOWAS Region. The EPSAO project is co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. #DigitalPeace #ECOWAS #InnovationInAction

Last year, Fact Foundation carried out a comprehensive closeout evaluation for the Regional Strategy for Stabilization, Recovery & Resilience (RS-SRR). This evaluation, commissioned by the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), covered the funding period from 2020 to 2023 provided by the African Development Bank (AfDB). It aimed to assess the achievements, challenges, and impacts of the RS-SRR, as well as support the transition plan. The evaluation process included extensive consultations with a wide array of stakeholders across the Lake Chad region, such as regional governments, military units, UN agencies, NGOs, and civil society organizations (CSOs). The evaluation covered all aspects of the RS-SRR including strengthening LCBC's institutional capacity to operationalize and implement the strategy, supporting regional dialogue, cross-border initiatives, and experience sharing. It also covered enhancing the regional CSO platform, facilitating engagement with the regional private sector, and Implementing economic interventions and empowerment programs for youth and women in Nigeria, Cameroun, Chad, and Niger. On December 10, 2024, ECOWAS member states convened in Abuja for a pivotal summit to address the pressing challenges facing the region, including political instability, economic recovery, and security concerns. As the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Protocol, I shared my thoughts on this critical gathering during an interview with ARISE News. In my discussion, I emphasized how the summit offered a unique opportunity for ECOWAS to strengthen its unity and present a cohesive front in tackling shared challenges. From the ongoing political tensions in member states to the need for economic cooperation, the discussions at the summit underscored the importance of collaboration for the collective progress of West Africa. A united front is not just ideal, it is essential for sustainable progress. I invite you to follow the full conversation here: [https://lnkd.in/duwuqthm]. What strategies do you believe will strengthen regional unity in ECOWAS? I look forward to your engagement. #AdemolaOshodi #ECOWASSummit #RegionalAffairs #Nigeria #Collaborationfordevelopment

Very rich discussions at the Ad Hoc WG on Conflict Prevention and Resolution in #Africa under the able chairmanship of Mozambique. We exchanged views on the implementation of #UNSC Res 2719, which avails a leap in fostering @UN - @_AfricanUnion partnership in peace and security. I reiterated #Egypt’s hope that this landmark resolution not only cements the UNSC's pledge to support sustainable and reliable financing for #AU PSOs, but also reflects a firm commitment to boosting the AU’s role in attaining regional stability. There is a need for additional modalities to elevate African physical capabilities, while achieving better synergies between the UNSC & the #AUPSC in preparing mandates and measuring progress. A lot of technical work is still needed to operationalize the first experimental PSOs. That matchmaking is the future of #African peace operations.
