🌏 This year, we are thrilled to share that Cahaya Society has been verified by SEWF - Social Enterprise World Forum as a part of People & Planet movement globally. 🎉 There is a growing movement of enterprises that prioritise people and our planet over private profit. They include social enterprises, cooperatives, fair trade enterprises, social business and others. People and Planet First is a banner that unites this global movement. It provides a verification system that recognises trusted country-based and global certifications, provides verification in countries where these do not exist, allows access to resources and strengthens collective advocacy. Together, as a global network of partners and verified enterprises, we are all transforming business and building an economy for everyone to thrive, within the means of our living planet. 🌏 💪🏻 Lets work together in making impact to the targeted key population across sectors. #CahayaSociety #EducationforAll #CSEnterprise #SocialEnterpriseWorldForum

Sights, sounds, & serendipity from #UNGA Part I – New threads This was an abbreviated UNGA trip (missed out on seeing so many friends & colleagues!), and I want to start with a moment that encapsulates the “beautiful serendipity” that unfolded. It starts with dinner with two #MillenniumFellowship Alums, Mathias Charles Yabe and Akul Gupta. Mathias shared the latest on AkoFresh ™️ in Ghana (and expanding in Uganda). The challenge: produce that isn’t refrigerated can spoil in 3-5 days. For many smallholder farmers, a significant percentage (up to 36%) of their produce ends up spoiling. Mathias developed a solar-powered refrigeration unit that extends the life of produce from 5 to 21 days. He’s growing an impressive, impact-focused company. In my notebook, I jotted down and circled the name of one of our earliest, brilliant alums, Toby Norman. Toby and his team have built Simprints, which has scaled and become an important player in helping ministries of health and leading organizations to digitize health records and optimize service delivery. We walked back to the hotel I was staying at. As we were saying goodbye outside, someone suddenly appeared. “Toby?” I was shocked! We greeted each other with a big hug. 30 seconds later, Toby’s friend Jonathan Jackson showed up and invited us to join him inside for a Dimagi + Friends get together. Watching Toby and Mathias connect was beautiful, and then it blossomed into something incredible. More visionaries sat down including Sasha Fisher (who leads Spark Microgrants – their civic organizing process has scaled to 1,000+ villages!). And then Mathias, sitting in a circle with these & more creative thinkers , shared his passion, deep insights on what has guided his progress, and future plans with clarity of purpose and objectives. I listened intently as advice was shared on diversifying Akofresh’s revenue streams and contacts were exchanged. This real-time ideation & feedback session was beyond what I could have imagined. Beautiful serendipity manifested, and it was so special to see two of our alums – Mathias and Toby - several years apart – uniting & drawing other leaders in too. My ask: please reach out to Mathias to learn more about Akofresh, particularly if you know potential investors, philanthropies, or other innovators who may find his work compelling! #MillenniumFellowship #civicengagement #SDGs #UNGA cc Millennium Campus Network (MCN) United Nations Academic Impact

In case you missed it, here's a recap of the insightful discussion at WCEF24 hosted by Yunus Environment Hub, featuring our founder, who shared the empowering strategies Padmad is employing in ensuring a Just Transition : 🌟 Padmad Kenya's Approach to Just Transition Strategies: Padmad is committed to employing, empowering, and scaling marginalized women across the country. Our focus extends to supporting teen moms, formerly incarcerated women, and those in prisons. Our strategies revolve around providing comprehensive training programs to equip these women with skills to secure sustainable incomes and lead dignified lives. 🏭 Incorporating MHM into Sustainable Industrial Policies: We believe in the pivotal role of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) in shaping sustainable industrial policies. By advocating for MHM in the workplace, we strive to foster social equity and inclusion within factories. 🌱 Environmentally Sustainable Solutions: One of our key initiatives involves the manufacture of reusable sanitary pads, which contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing the influx of disposable pads into landfills. Moreover, we prioritize sourcing raw materials from companies committed to minimizing their carbon footprint. As Padmad, we recognize the importance of circular economy models in driving sustainable change. Thank you, Yunus Environment Hub, for letting us participate in this wonderful discussion, and thank you to the other panellists who shared their great strides in ensuring a just transition to a circular economy. ............................................................................................................................................................ 🎉LET'S CELEBRATE A DECADE OF TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT WITH KHAAS FOOD; HONORING OUR FARMERS AND THE RICH HERITAGE OF DATE MOLASSES 🎉 In the serene heart of Bangladesh, where tradition meets toil, we embarked on an inspiring journey to Jashore to collect the exquisite dates molasses, 'Jiren Rosher Gur'. This heritage product, painstakingly processed by marginal farmers, carries the essence of our culture. For almost a decade, Khaas Food has been dedicated to bringing the best produce to end consumers while making a significant economic impact on the community. We partner with resilient farmers who devote their lives to this craft, often under challenging conditions. Their days begin before dawn, tapping date palm trees and collecting the precious sap that will become rich, sweet molasses. We couldn't let this heritage wither. We reached out to these communities, aiming to make a meaningful difference. We didn't just buy their products; we invested in their futures. Through fair trade, financial aid, and capacity-building initiatives, we are enriching lives and fostering sustainable livelihoods. Take Mintu, for example. A dedicated farmer, Mintu faced many hardships but continued his work with passion. After partnering with us, he has seen the fruits of success—improved income, better living conditions, and renewed hope for the future. We ensure that our 'Jiren Rosher Gur' remains true to its origins—free from preservatives, colors, or starch. This commitment to authenticity guarantees that every spoonful retains its pure, traditional flavor. This journey is more than a business endeavor; it's a heartfelt commitment to uplift our community and preserve our cultural heritage. "The biggest impact created is the over 22.000 jobs that AMAATI CO. LTD has created in the #fonio value chain, and that alone can be valued over $200,000 in two years." Abdulai Salma, the Co-Founder and CEO of Amaati, revealed that the company has expanded from 10 landowners to over 5.000 smallholder women farmers and 1.600 men farmers since they started. The support from Amaati is part of the interventions under the Grains for Growth Program, a joint effort with the Mastercard Foundation that makes us proud. Right there, we support small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) in the rice, maise, millet, sorghum and fonio value chains to support the inclusion of about 42.000 smallholder farmers through sourcing grains from them at a premium price, empowering them – particularly for women and youth while creating job opportunities and increasing farmer incomes.
