I have been doing a lot of reflection from a work perspective lately. This is something I do as a regular part of my job, as I'm sure do many people in a similar role. I have been prompted into more in depth and recorded reflection by two factors: firstly, practicing what I espouse! Teaching on the L6 CDPA, requires the apprentices to reflect and improve as part of the underpinning qualification and in recording Off the Job training. Some take to this activity well and demonstrate how effective it can be in creating clarity of purpose and focussing in on goals. Others see it as a bit of an afterthought and don't value the in depth exploration of an experience in order to make sense of it and identify what worked and what may need developing. I see this as a missed opportunity but maybe one I have been avoiding myself. I am now studying for a part-time Masters in Education and currently in the midst of a module: Becoming a Reflective and Research informed practitioner. This module is challenging me to thoroughly explore my practice through a detailed reflection. I am finding this a valuable and positive experience. Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd employs academic, research and professional service staff members. Their partnership with Educ8 Training began in the School of Psychology, and they now typically recruit three to four apprentices every two years. These apprentices are offered fixed-term, two-year contracts and work within various departments, including finance, health and safety, human resources, and education. The apprenticeship program ensures that the apprentices gain diverse experiences and skills. One of the key strengths of the apprenticeship program is its flexibility. The Business Administration apprenticeship offered by Educ8 Training allows the university to tailor the qualification to meet the specific needs of the department in which the apprentice is based. For instance, apprentices in HR can focus on the recruitment module, those in finance study the finance-specific modules, and there are also health and safety and other general business modules available. Today two of our apprentices, Holly Steel our L6 Digital Marketer and Finnley Kriehn our L2 Assistant Scientist in Plant Protection, took the opportunity during National Apprenticeship Week to visit a local school in the area, to share their experience as apprentices at Fera. 🎓 Encouraging and supporting the development of soft skills in our apprentices is important as employers and seizing opportunities to discuss apprenticeships in schools is something we actively seek. 🔬 This not only benefits the apprentices themselves giving them the space to practice these skills but generates interest around science apprenticeships at Fera! #NAW24 #YHAAN #apprenticeships

Continuing our #NAW2024 theme. Charlotte Hobbs, our second degree apprentice, joined the team back in 2021. With lots of extra curricular experience, drive and enthusiasm, Charlotte has quickly got up to speed and delivered great project input. She’s worked on a variety of jobs from intense heritage investigation on Wills Memorial Building for the University of Bristol to the new build Castle School in Thornbury. We are really proud to have Charlotte on the University of the West of England Building Services Engineering Degree Apprenticeship. The University are keen to address the underrepresentation of women in the engineering and construction industry. They have been awarded funding for six of their degree apprenticeship courses, including the Building Services Engineering. 👨🏫 We held a Q&A with Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprentice, Josh, to find out about his apprenticeship experience. Q: Tell us a bit about yourself... Josh: "I completed a degree in Film and TV Production at University. I had a brief stint producing client scripts but work was very intermittent. I enjoyed it but decided to retrain as a Teaching Assistant as I'm interested in working with SEN students." Q: Why did you decide to study with us? J: "I needed a local college with a reputable teaching assistant course - New College Swindon fit the bill perfectly!" Q: What do you like most about college? J: "My tutors are supportive and help me stay on track." Q: How does your qualification benefit your current role? J: "On completion, I will be a qualified Teaching Assistant. These skills will help me no matter where my career takes me." Q: What are your plans for the future? J: "I'm interested in teaching film at secondary school, or becoming a SENCo." Yesterday, Dr Gavin Lind, CEO of AUSMASA was delighted to meet with Steve Whan, NSW Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, to discuss the Australian Universities Accord (https://lnkd.in/g6B8qshG), the Strategic Review of the Australian Apprenticeship Incentive System and the work currently underway by AUSMASA to find solutions to skills and workforce challenges. The discussion revolved around the future of tertiary education in Australia and the key factors needed to achieve it. The SWE Guidance on Practice Placements provides a definition of statutory tasks that can be applied to agencies based in the private, voluntary and independent ( PVI) sector. In my development work over the past 4 years, I have explored, in some detail, if and how the definition might be applied to agencies in the PVI sector. The learning from this process is being shared nationally as part of the ‘Lessons Learned – Development of Statutory Task Placements in the PVI Sector’ series. In this bite-sized clip from a recorded evaluation meeting with Simon Forster, an experienced Social Worker and Independent Reviewing Officer, we hear his views as a Practice Educator on how agencies in the PVI sector meet the definition of ‘statutory tasks’.
