In the municipality of Velenje (Slovenia) together with 66 partners, public institutions, companies and institutions, we signed a commitment to achieve the goals of the Mission of 100 climate-neutral and smart cities - an agreement on the implementation of general and concrete measures on the way to climate neutrality by 2023. The commitment is an integral part of the Climate Neutral Agreement for achieving climate neutrality by 2030, which was prepared by the municipality of Velenje and will be forwarded to the European Commission. The documents deal with climate action in the energy, construction, transport, waste management and green infrastructure sectors. By signing the pledge to achieve climate neutrality in Velenje, we committed to investing in the continuous improvement of the energy efficiency of the factory and facilities with annual energy efficiency goals determined on the basis of the best available technologies, the implementation of the ISO50001 energy management system and, as a result, to improved energy efficiency, the search for a solution for reducing the consumption of district heating by investing in renewable energy sources, reducing water consumption and finding solutions for water reuse, reducing the amount of waste by implementing a waste management hierarchy in all operations, monitoring and reducing the impact of our production on air, soil and biodiversity, increasing the share of electric vehicles among company vehicles, reducing the volume of emissions through active cooperation with our suppliers and other partners, including logistics, to constantly developing new solutions to reduce the energy consumption of our products, designing and developing appliances in a way that reduces their overall carbon footprint throughout their life cycle, to explore and exploit new opportunities in the circular economy, and to educate and empower consumers to reduce emissions. We will also strive to popularize energy efficiency and general sustainability by educating employees and by actively considering their contributions and suggestions through sustainability certificates, e.g., Green Star, EcoVadis, etc. We will also weave our sustainability efforts into other activities and projects confirmed by our sustainability strategy. We will continue to take decisive action to improve energy efficiency, reduce our environmental impact and carbon footprint, and achieve our goals on the road to sustainability. This cutting-edge facility converts 90,000 tons of non-recyclable waste, wood waste, and SRF into 300,000 MWh of renewable energy annually, enough to heat 24,000 homes and support local manufacturers. By reducing landfill use and avoiding 50,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year, BIOSYNERGY aligns with France's Energy Transition for Green Growth Act and its 2050 carbon neutrality target. The SRF fuel is prepared locally at SUEZ’s TriNergy site in Rogerville, exemplifying circular economy principles. “This flagship project showcases how we can create value from waste for the benefit of the region and its people,” said Sabrina Soussan, CEO of SUEZ. Vauban Infrastructure Partners echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of public-private cooperation in advancing sustainability initiatives. WORLD ENVIRONMENT (EVERY)DAY 🌳 Yesterday was the World Environment Day 2024, a global initiative by the United Nations. Since 1973, this annual event has served as a crucial reminder to raise awareness about environmental issues, promote positive action and advocate for sustainability in our everyday choices. This initiative is really great although, in our opinion, something we should all think about, talk about and act upon on a daily basis.   In St. Jørgen we all share a passion for a greener future. Being committed to developing renewable energy projects, we are deeply devoted to make a difference for our planet, driving sustainable growth one initiative at a time. The transition to clean energy is vital for the restoration of our planet. And so is retaining and strengthening biodiversity, which is also one of our focus areas. [Press release] A few months after the launch of its new strategic #GreenUp program, which plans to accelerate its #decarbonization trajectory, Veolia has taken a significant new step in its climate strategy by obtaining the validation of its objectives by the Science Based Targets initiative (#SBTi), the international reference in this field. The SBTi notably praised the Group’s net-zero ambition, recognized as the most ambitious among those it tracks. 🌏 ➡️ At the heart of Veolia’s performance model, decarbonization is a powerful driver and a source of value creation for the Group and its clients in the long term. This pragmatic and action-oriented approach allows Veolia to display significant progress in achieving its objectives. ➡️ Particularly, concerning the 1.6 billion euro program to convert coal-based energy production assets to less carbon-intensive energies or the development of local decarbonizing #energy. ⚡ ➡️ Veolia was the first Group to display erased emissions for its clients who are part of Scope 4 which it actively supports at the global level to accelerate the #EcologicalTransformation and particularly the decarbonization of industrial and economic activities. In 2023, Veolia contributed to erase 13.8 Mt of emissions. 🏭🏙️ ➡️ Overall, the emission reduction targets of the Group’s validated climate trajectory are aligned with a 1.5°C trajectory set by the Paris Agreement.
