2020 Holidays, Headaches & Happiness?

2020 Holidays, Headaches & Happiness?

2020 Has Been a Nightmare For Many

When we rang in the new year full of hope and optimism, we were not prepared for what was about to come. Now the holidays are here, and many are confused. Others are broke. Millions of folks are angry. Now duties and expectations for the holidays are here.

Alice, a successful businesswoman, felt forced to take time off to homeschool her children. She said, "Are you kidding me? Am I now supposed to run around as if nothing happened and create an amazing holiday?"

Victor and Mary have not seen their parents since the quarantine. They feel that the holidays remind them of their losses in 2020. "We are just going to have a small gathering with the kids. We are incredibly sad. We miss our family."

Yet, the pandemic, financial difficulties, loss of income, and quarantines have taken their toll. To add to that, we have had social injustices around the world. The United States has been the talk around the world. Members of foreign countries have taken sides with a divided America.

Losses

Children's schools have been interrupted. Many face school closures and shutdowns again to get the COVID-19 pandemic in control.

Silvia lost her brother recently, "The holidays cause an acute feeling of loss of my brother. It brings up memories of happier times. I loved my brother so much. I can still hear his laughter, but now he is gone."

Millions around the world have lost loved ones due to COVID. THEIR PAIN IS ACUTE.

Bittersweet Holidays?

The holidays will be bittersweet for many of us. It may be wise to be aware of what is going on inside emotionally to stay ahead of anxiety, stress, and depression.

You have made it through another year in your legal practice. You are already aware that 2021 will be even more uncertain. The pressure may make it difficult to relax and enjoy the holidays.

For many lawyers/solicitors, the holidays can be just another list of 'to do's.'

During the holiday season, celebrations and gatherings are limited or nonexistent. You miss your friends and relatives. You may try to get into the spirit by spending lots of money ordering things you don't need online.

Peter explained, "Sure, I make a good living as an attorney. But during the holidays, my hands dig deep into my pockets for gifts, liquor, groceries, and there are travel expenses. Spending the extra money on food, cocktails, purchases, and gifts this year stresses me out! My family will spend too much money. Besides, I am already exhausted from my demanding law practice. But no one seems to notice."

The anxiety continues once the bills roll in. Many will gain more weight. Some will suffer from migraine headaches. Lingering depression, ongoing hangovers, enormous credit card bills (overdrafts) are all consequences.

These effects will remain long after the end of the holidays. This will lead to even more anxiety and depression. Some of you are predisposed towards depression. Your genetics or due to your physiology, you need to be "extraordinarily careful. " It will take a conscious effort on your part to reduce your anxiety -- and maybe even find some holiday joy.

Here are some tips to help you minimize your overwhelm during the holidays. You might even enjoy the season more than you would have thought.

1. IT IS OKAY TO ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR TRUE FEELINGS

It is okay if you don't feel happy. This year has been unusual and painful in many ways. You can be authentic, tone down your holidays, and acknowledge that this is not business as usual. Be gentle with yourself.

2. BE PREPARED:

Many have experienced loss in your family, a beloved parent, a brother, a sister, a cherished child, or even a dear friend. Know that the holidays will probably be especially difficult. You may re-experience the loss, so be prepared. It is normal to feel sadness or grief, even though it is the holidays.

3. BE AWARE:

Stress, anxiety, and overwhelm cause depression. Understand that holidays are times for a spike in depression for thousands, especially this year. Millions of individuals are struggling, so you are not alone. Don't be fooled by all of the smiles that surround you.

Have compassion for yourself: You can feel lonely or isolated at a community, religious, or other social events, especially if you are a lawyer.

4. BE REALISTIC:

Don't strive for perfection during the holidays. Money can be tight, and uncertainty looms. There is a quarantine. You are wearing masks. These things are traumatizing. Not to mention that things change; children grow up and leave empty nests. Sometimes they spend holidays with their in-laws, and that can hurt.

5. BE OK IF TRADITIONS CHANGE

Traditions and rituals need to grow with the family. Ask for family input instead of imposing out-of-date traditions that no one wants to follow. Don't get hung up on what the holidays are supposed to be. Accept that your feelings are valid. Don't judge or beat yourself because you don't feel happy and joyous.

You are definitely the expert to help attorneys in navigating the ravages and trials of 2020. I appreciate your consistent advice and direction to shift to find happiness and peace. We are focusing on gratitude, great family memories of lost ones and creating new traditions. Even facetime is better than not enjoying our family in person. I hope many reach out to you so they can truly enjoy the holidays.
