What is the most successful routine I can put in place to achieve my business goals without working more?

This is one of the #1 questions I get asked.

I know you don't have a lot of time in your day.

You’re busy working on client delivery and want to maintain your life balance.

This is why it’s so important for you to make the amount of time that you have available to work on your business incredibly impactful.

So… I’ve created a shortcut for you.

Here are the 3 components of a Successful IC Business Owner Routine.

Why should you even bother setting up a routine in your independent consulting business?

Take notice of this article if you are saying any of the following:

  • “I know I need a routine. I just don't have time to deal with this.”
  • “I kind of loosely have a routine, and it's basically working. So I don't know that spending any more time on building out a better routine is worth it.”

Creating a routine allows you to create predictability in your business and sets you up to scale.

You do this by creating a routine that allows you to see if you do a certain amount of input, then it creates a certain amount of output. This lets you know what those data points are. And when those data points are off or not working anymore, you have such a better leading indicator as a result of it.

This keeps you from creating a feast or famine situation in your independent consulting business.

Creating a solid business routine also allows you to become proactive in your business instead of reactive.

By looking at your business in a more comprehensive way, you will be able to create a routine that not only handles the day-to-day but also helps make sure that you're tackling things that are more strategic. You want to get to the place where your business is a well-oiled machine. But you can’t do that without a routine.

So- what are the 3 components of the successful IC business owner routine?

  1. Make sure your routine has very well-defined, measurable run/maintain tasks.
  2. Always have at least one, no more than two, business focus projects.
  3. Have a practice for business owner mindset.

Component #1- What is a measurable run/maintain task in your independent consulting business?

Run/maintain tasks in your independent consulting business are repeatable activities that keep your business running, and they're measurable.

An example of this would be breaking down your lead generation process into bite-sized repeatable activities that allow you to keep the worth of your pipeline at a certain amount.

Other examples might include:

  • Invoicing your clients.
  • Paying taxes.
  • Giving data to your bookkeeper.
  • Having a process of setting and planning for quarterly goals.

Component #2- What is a business focus project in your independent consulting business?

What is the one project you could take on in your own business that will move the needle to make achieving the goals that you've set for this year inevitable?

Some examples of these might be:

  • A deep dive into how you can increase the value of your pipeline.
  • Switching your pricing from hourly to value-based pricing.

Business focus projects are really looking at the levers in your business that are going to make the biggest impact for you over the next quarter.

If you're constantly trying to solve all the problems in your business, you end up really spreading yourself so thin and making very little impact. That's why including a business focus project in your routine is so incredibly important.

Component #3- Why do you need to focus on your business owner mindset as a bout of your IC business owner routine?

Mindset is everything in life and especially in business.  I've been doing this for 12 years. For the first 7-8 years, I had no concept of what mindset work was, why it was beneficial, or how to even do it.

There's a stark difference between what I was able to accomplish in those 7 years painfully and what I've been able to accomplish in the last 5 years in my business.

It's night and day not only in the amount of achievement that I've had but also in the enjoyment, balance, and ability to manage the mental overhead.

If you want to grow and scale your independent consulting business and be able to create more income for yourself with more happiness and less stress, you have to have a business owner mindset practice in place.

Having a business owner mindset routine for yourself is one of the keys to success and why it's 1/3 of this independent consultant success routine that I'm sharing with you today.

Ask yourself:

  • What have I already done in the past that helps me to get my mindset into a productive place?
  • How can I do more of that on an intentional basis, and build it into my routine?
