3 consequences of Coronavirus you are not thinking about

The Coronavirus epidemic Covid-19 seems to become the worst global economic crisis since Second World War because it affects both economic supply and demand by disrupting supply chains and daily activities of companies and forcing people to avoid tourism, travel and spending for social and cultural activities.

There are however other indirect consequences that are not discussed in the media.

1. Potential collapse of countries not facing contagion

My thinking goes especially to Nigeria which is still largely dependent on export of oil to finance public expenditure by the central government. Even if OPEC+ manages to cut oil production, oil prices are going to stay low for a long time and in the meantime renewable energy and electric mobility continue to erode the consumption of fossil fuels.

What happens when the Nigerian government stops to pay public servants and the military?

Pakistan also has much to suffer if oil prices stay low, because its fragile economy is sustained by the remittances of Pakistani workers living abroad and especially in oil rich countries like Saudi Arabia. If the whole world goes in recession or low economic growth how many Pakistani expatriates will lose their job?

Together Nigeria and Pakistan have more than 400 million inhabitants so if they become failed states it would affect the whole world, but with their young population they will not directly suffer so much from the epidemic itself.

2. Less car accidents

If people travel less it is to expect a decrease in car accidents and deaths worldwide that could partly compensate the deaths caused by the epidemic. This positive effect could be lower if people switch to private cars to avoid contagion in public transportation

3. Many caregivers could lose their job

for the tragic reaeson that many elder people pass away because of the epidemic and so families do not need their services to help their relatives at home.
