7 Reasons Your Quarterly Objectives Fail
Know the feeling of wrapping up a quarter to find your team's objectives partially achieved or, in some cases, barely initiated? You're not alone in that — this is something I've seen over and over with leadership teams across various industries.
From what I've seen, this gap is frequently the result of several common missteps in the objective-setting process.
This is why your quarterly objectives fail:
1️⃣ Establishing too many objectives: Overloading your team with too many goals can lead to burnout and confusion.
2️⃣ Not requiring a plan for how and when objectives will be achieved: Without a clear roadmap, objectives are just wishful thinking.
3️⃣ Failing to push for significant improvement for fear that people are already overwhelmed: Don't let fear hold back your team's potential for growth.
4️⃣ Not assigning clear, one-person accountability for each key objective: Clear ownership is key for ensuring tasks don't fall through the cracks.
5️⃣ Signaling an unspoken “if you possibly can” at the end of a statement of expectation: This undermines the importance of the objective and can lead to lackluster efforts.
6️⃣ Accepting reverse objectives (“Sure, I can get it done if you will see to it that…”): Avoid shifting responsibility and ensure clear accountability.

7️⃣ Changing objectives before they are accomplished: Stick to your goals and see them through to completion.
Okay, now ask yourself:
Now you know! It's time to avoid these pitfalls and set more effective objectives for next quarter.
