Is It Ageism, Or Is It Your Fault?
The other day, I spoke to a job seeker in his 60's. He said his major job search problem was ageism. Not surprising.
I have no doubt that he was experiencing age discrimination - but ageism wasn't his major job problem. He had much bigger problems ... and you might too.
Ageism wasn't what caused him to get just 3 phone interviews after sending out hundreds of resumes. Ageism wasn't what caused those phone interviews to go no further.
So what caused all of his efforts to go nowhere?
It was his fault - It's what he chose to communicate.
His resume was below average, and he didn't light any fires in his phone interviews. But when I talked to him, I heard a confident candidate who still had a lot to contribute.
But the examples he chose to communicate only described the things he was supposed to do. He gave me no idea from his resume or interview if he did his job well, poorly, or at all.
You might get a good job that way, if you're straight out of school with good grades, but employers expect more from candidates over 40. An age 40+ candidate has more years of experience, giving employers the perception of higher compensation expectations than a more junior candidate. So, employers expect more than a listing of responsibilities.
And while this 60 year old job seeker had plenty of what employers expect, he didn't know how to communicate it during interviews and on his resume. He communicated what he was told to communicate by outplacement and other career coaches/authors ... responsibilities/experience, that undersold his abilities.
Instead, employers expect impact from senior level job seekers, whether they are executives, managers or senior staff level candidates (why shouldn't they, when they're expecting to pay you more).

Not just a few examples ... overwhelming impact. The good news is ... You have this inside of you. When you've had a long and even moderately successful career, you've made an impact. Not once, but many times. I can show you how to draw it out, how to communicate it so employers get it, both during interviews and on your resume.
I can show you how to communicate the impact you've made so that it lands you interviews and causes employers to choose you to advance through the hiring process ... and win the job.
I can show you how to communicate the ability to deliver so much impact to an employer, that it dwarfs your salary expectations and turns your job search around.
Because hiring managers hire impact, not just responsibilities and experience, especially when you're over 40.
The good news is that you can change this perception. You can change employer perceptions that you're overpriced and won't be worth it. You can stop being called overqualified, and instead be referred to as ...Hired.
And I can show you how, like I've helped thousands of age 40, 50, 60, and even 70+ job seekers, to beat job search ageism.
I help people solve the most difficult job search problems, including job search acceleration, getting past ATSs, ageism, remote positions, product/job function/career/industry/ geographic change, unemployment, "bouncy" recent career path, job search turnaround, seeking raise/promotion, industry in decline/consolidation, long term gaps, family leave, or other of the most challenging job search issues.
