✅The Hype Cycle has passed the peak of exaggerated expectations

The Hype Cycle of AI

Gartner researchers have developed the AI Hype Cycle, a tool that illustrates the evolution of artificial intelligence through various phases.

📉 Recently, they observed that generative AI has moved past the peak of inflated expectations and is now heading towards the “trough of disillusionment.”

Despite this, the excitement around AI persists. Significant value is being derived from other AI technologies, often in conjunction with generative AI. These initiatives are grounded in standardized processes that facilitate their implementation.

✅What is the 10–20–70 rule?

The

💥Researchers have articulated the 10–20–70 rule for pacesetters: 10% of a company’s efforts should be dedicated to algorithms, 20% to technology and data, and the remaining 70%—the lion’s share—should focus on people and processes.

The Biggest Challenges are related to People and Processes

✅Three Distinctive Traits of AI Leaders

Researchers have identified three key strategies that enable AI leaders to outperform AI laggards:

✔️ They are more ambitious. Leaders set big targets and invest more of their budget and resources to digital and AI capabilities.

✔️ They focus on fewer efforts for greater ROI. Leaders invest strategically in a few high-priority opportunities to scale and maximize AI’s value. They focus on fewer use cases, but they put more money, resources, and effort into those opportunities.

Greater ROI with AI

✔️ They focus on the core. Leaders are using AI not only to strengthen support areas, but to transform essential business operations. These core functions vary across industries, like R&D in pharma or underwriting in insurance. The key is that they don’t shy away from those areas—because you can find real advantage there.

This insightful research uncovered fascinating patterns among AI leaders, demonstrating that these companies achieve significantly better results compared to laggards. However, it also revealed that most companies have yet to realize the true value of AI, despite experimenting with it. The key to the success of AI leaders lies primarily in their leadership behavior. As researchers noted, without strong, people-centered strategies, even the best AI initiatives can fall short...

Very informative research! A key insight is the focus on core business functions—an area many organizations shy away from due to its complexity. Yet, leaders who prioritize and invest in this space gain a significant competitive advantage by transforming operations essential for long-term growth. As AI moves beyond the hype, this research provides a clear roadmap for identifying fewer, high-impact opportunities that deliver measurable ROI, enabling a shift from experimentation to transformation. The goal is to experiment less, prioritize strategically, and invest intentionally in both people and AI. Productivity gains are just the beginning—AI’s true promise lies in driving new revenue streams, enhancing workplace experiences, and fostering a culture where technology empowers people to thrive. Thank you for sharing!

Nicolas BEHBAHANI fascinating insights on the impact of AI in business. While reading, this quote stood out to me: "There are three kinds of companies: those who make things happen; those who watch things happen; and those who wonder what’s happened." In today’s rapidly changing environment, success isn’t about having the most resources but being the most resourceful. Every organization should continuously ask itself: "What can we do to achieve our ambitious goals in a way that brings us total fulfillment?" This requires an intrinsic "hunger" to challenge the status quo, deeply embedded in the company’s DNA. Organizations with this mindset will consistently outperform others, regardless of the innovations or disruptions they encounter. My suggestion for every CEO or HR manager that has aversion against AI, I would say: Change your paradigm.
