Around the Bases 8/24

Welcome back! Apologies for the late send this week. August seems to be flying by as the football season kicking off today. Thanks for your time here, whether you are a loyal member of the community or taking your first trip "Around the Bases". The membership continues to grow, and its mostly from the word of mouth from those that have been here since we started about 3 years ago.

As a career media producer, I have learned more than a few lessons from my time in the trade that have crossed over to my non-media life (yes I have one, a must for anyone n the business). As producers, we have a goal for the project we are involved with. We set out and plan a strategy that seems to make sense before we get started. Then, along the way, a few things pop up and it's off to Plan B. Or Plan C. Or D. Being flexible and having the ability to shift the strategy around are essential to just about anything you plan to do. "The Plan" is a great idea, and if it works out, awesome. Just make sure you have a couple of other ideas in your pocket to make sure the goal you are pushing yourself towards can be achieved.

This week's Something to Watch connected with me right away. I often preach to just about anyone looking to start something with this question- What do you want? The answer lies within you, and it may change from time to time, but realizing what that is can make the path so much easier. Knowing your purpose and following the steps to achieve that goal will eliminate all of the obstacles that you will encounter along the way. This comes from Rita Wilson, also known as Mrs, Tom Hanks. Awesome stuff.

The Question I Almost Didn't Ask and How it Changed My Life

This week's Something to Read is another offering from a great author that I have featured in this space before, Kobi Yamada has a great collection of children's books with messages for all ages, this is just one of them that might just give you the push you are looking for.

Chasing Dreams: How to Add More Daring to Your Doing

This week's Something to Listen To is a great combination of a couple of great people. Jay Shetty hosts the "On Purpose" podcast, and his guest in this episode is Robert Greene, who has written a few amazing books. Great advice here about dealing with some negative people that surround you.

How to Deal With Negative People

Circling back to the question I posed earlier- "What do I want?". There have been a few of the awful trade winds blowing through our industry the past week or 2, with layoffs happening again as the business keeps shifting around faster than ever. If you are needing some help sorting that question out and looking for a plan to deal with the path you have decided to walk, we should connect and talk. I have spent a majority of my life helping others in the sports media world with all kinds of things I never thought possible when I set out on my path so many years ago. Due for a resume refresh or a reel review from a seasoned producer who will get it arranged the right way to have the most impact? Or are you just looking for some career advice and strategy from a guy who has seen just about everything? Those are just a few of the ways we can help each other. All it takes from you is the first step. Check out my website below and set up a free consultation call and let's see what we can do together.

That's a wrap for this week- before we go, a quick shout to those here in the group who are starting something new (you know who you are!). Have a great rest of the weekend and thanks again for being a part of the newsletter!

Great article as always, Tom Roche. With my experience editing videos and broadcast operations, I feel I may be better as a producer with my next career step. I looked into getting a Project Management certificate. I know it's not required to be a producer, but do you think it would be if I got one?
