AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP WITH JERRY COLONNA

AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP WITH JERRY COLONNA

The extent to which you, as a leader, believe in your people and convey that belief can have a significant impact to unlocking their potential and maximising the performance of your team. This is crucial since many individuals have self-doubt and rely on the support of others to succeed. However, how often do leaders communicate this belief to their teams?

In this episode of the Everyday Leadership Podcast, I am joined by Jerry Colonna . He is the CEO and co-founder of Reboot.io, an executive culture and leadership development company that believes better humans make better leaders. He wrote the wonderful book “Reboot: Leadership and the Art of Growing Up.” Jerry is known as Silicon Valley's “CEO whisperer” for his work with huge firms like Etsy.

Our conversation covered a wide range of topics, including the impact sponsorship had on his career, details about the book he is currently writing, the importance of having people who believe in you, leading with integrity and mindfulness, overcoming resistance to change, fear of losing control, and the definition of a true leader.

“Living into what people believed is a powerful energetic motivator.”

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀:

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹

“When we have power… we're not taught what to do to give up power. We're not taught that giving up power doesn’t mean our death. We need to understand that true safety, true power, and true belonging, come with shared power, shared governance, and shared equitable leadership. I've got your back, you've got my back. We go forward.”

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲

“When people reach out across time and space and say, "Your story is my story," what they're affirming is the shared human experience and the interdependence that we all have because that boulder doesn’t get up the hill by itself and it ain't never going to get up the hill with one person pushing or get up the hill and roll right back down and kill the guy. So success means us all in it together.”

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻

“What I am leaning into is the fact that we cannot address systemic oppression without systemic belonging. And you can't get there unless folks who look like me who hold power are willing to look at their shit and grow up and lead from a place of strength and courage instead of from fear and power and domination.”

🚫 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽

“The common understanding of leadership is you're at the top of the pyramid so, therefore, you must be the best or the most powerful or the smartest or whatever, which is utter nonsense.”

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲

“We read Shakespeare, read Aristotle, read the Buddha, read Jesus' teachings, read Moses' teachings, read the prophets' teachings. When there's such consistent messaging coming from a wide variety of sources, chances are really good. Scientifically, it's the truth. And the truth is with great power comes great responsibility. That's why it's a moral obligation.”

Even though our time together was short, Jerry and I covered some serious ground, including the importance of having faith in oneself and others, the difficulty of discussing race, and the responsibility of leaders. You should stop what you're doing and listen to this profound discussion!
