Authenticity Over Conformity: The Power of Building a Network Based on True Identity

Embracing Your True Self: The Key to Meaningful Networking

Fitting in is not as important as networking and building like-minded alliances. It is crucial to build a network based on knowing who you are, focusing on who you are, and staying true to who you are. Growing up in the amazing town of Ferriday, Louisiana—a town built on pride—I quickly realized that I did not fit in. Ferriday was a place where tradition and conformity were valued, and for a dreamer like me, it felt stifling. I had big dreams and aspirations that extended beyond the boundaries of my hometown, and I often felt out of place.

At times, I thought my calling might be to follow in the path of many men in my family on my dad's side and become a preacher. But let's face it, I did not fit in. While I found great guidance in the church and my Baptist Bible, I believed that people needed inspiration in life not just based on the book they read or the building they spent their Sundays in. I felt a disconnect between the traditional path and my desire to inspire others through a broader perspective.

Later, I felt drawn to politics. However, I quickly realized that to truly excel in politics, one often has to compromise personal beliefs and embrace a certain level of dishonesty or superficiality. My focus has always been on being honest with myself, and around politicians, I truly did not fit in. I wanted to become better, learn to accept my flaws, and embrace my truth—not just live in dreams. I simply didn't fit in because I believed that politically-minded leaders should always start with personal growth.

My Army career was an invaluable experience where I learned about leadership and discipline. But if I am to be honest, I did not fit in there either. The military environment was filled with individuals who, while appearing to be alphas, often lacked real plans outside the Army regulations and field manuals that allowed them to pretend to be put together. I found that many were weak-minded personalities hiding behind a facade of strength.

Oddly enough, where I truly fit in—and where I feel I would have always fit in—is the business arena. In business, you cannot fake who you are. You either have vision, values, and a mission, or you fall flat. It is a place where authenticity reigns supreme, and your true self must shine through for success. This realization taught me the importance of finding where you fit in and focusing on building that network.

The essence of building a strong network lies in authenticity. It's about being who you are and surrounding yourself with those who embrace your true self. This is what building a network is all about. Here are three ways to build an authentic network with grace:

1. Embrace Your True Identity: To build a network that resonates with who you are, start by embracing your true identity. Reflect on your values, passions, and goals. Be honest with yourself about what you stand for and what you seek to achieve. When you present yourself authentically, you attract like-minded individuals who appreciate and support your genuine self. This authenticity will help you form deeper, more meaningful connections.

2. Cultivate Genuine Relationships: Networking is not just about expanding your contacts; it's about cultivating genuine relationships. Take the time to understand the people you meet, listen to their stories, and offer your support. Authentic connections are built on mutual respect and trust. When you approach networking with a sincere desire to learn from and help others, you create a supportive community that fosters growth and success for everyone involved.

3. Stay Consistent and True to Your Values: Consistency is key to maintaining authenticity in your network. Stay true to your values and principles, even when faced with challenges or temptations to conform. Your integrity will earn you respect and loyalty from your network. By consistently aligning your actions with your beliefs, you reinforce your authenticity and inspire others to do the same. This creates a strong foundation for long-lasting, impactful relationships.

In conclusion, fitting in is far less important than building a network based on true identity and authenticity. My journey from Ferriday, Louisiana, through various career paths, has taught me the importance of being who you are and surrounding yourself with those who embrace your true self. By embracing your identity, cultivating genuine relationships, and staying true to your values, you can build a powerful, authentic network that supports your growth and success. Authenticity is the key to forming meaningful connections and achieving lasting impact.
